Stinky Ditch

19 posts in this topic

How's the ice and the bite? Is the early ice bite over yet? It's been many years since I lived up there and fished the good ol stinky ditch. Am thinking of coming up this weekend. I was up there last fall and saw they changed the parking situation. Can you still walk down the rocks?

Thx!

Some morons driving trucks on Shagawa!!! confused.gif

Sooner or later one will go down. crazy.gif

Only thing that will save them is the snow and slush is too deep to drive anyplace!!

The bite on Shagawa has slowed down alot this week. I think the traditional "early ice hot bite on Shagawa" might be over with. Almost all of the Walleyes this year have been tiny anyways!

I will keep ya posted!

FT, GO is the old and current owner of Great Oudoors, and is he ever OLD! grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Just kidding! He sells you bait by the dozen or by the scoop and as an old Finn doesn't know how to count to 12. And then he tells you where to go. He even makes and sells candles for the foo-foo chick crowd. What more can you ask for in a bait shop? grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

FireTigers

I be the first, last, and only owner of the GO.

Built it, and opened for business in spring of 1985.

Put it up for sale a year and a half ago, just a hobby for me now.

As for the Foo Foo candles, stfcatfish's favorite is "Midnight in Winton." laugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.gif

PS-As far as you making the statement that "it's the best bait shop in town" only proves to me that you are a man of keen insight, with an IQ of 175, at the minimum!! cool.gif

So no one should fish Shag, because it's a bit of hard work. And no one should buy bait at GO, because Shag is a bit of hard work. Got it, big boy.

The bite has slowed down. I went out again last night and it was slow again. It always seems to slow down out there after the full moon in December. Its always good right up to full then whammo! Game Over. I noticed this phenomenon about 3 years ago and it has happened every year. Going to try it again tonight, then I may be trying some different lakes after that. Getting kinda bored and in need of some new scenery!

Well, I have to say that I was skunked on Shag this weekend. I wanted to go out on olson bay but there was a lot of slush so I had to settle for sandy point. I kinda wonder about the mindset of the guys driving out there. They were really flying across the ice. I wasn't seeing more than 9in of ice out there.

I did get some tullibies and perch in Bear Island Lake. We were fishing in the shallow part going into the Bear Island River.

Don't feel bad Deadeye...The fishing has been terrible out there the past 5 days and today especially!!! Those guys driving out there are completely out of their minds. I also like how they drive about 50 mph out there. Somebody is going to drive through this year, I just know it.

Take care,

Justin

I think their logic is that if/when the ice breaks they will be going fast enough to skip over the water. grin.gif

Anyfish2 - thanks for the reports. I believe it was you who had written a little summary that included a rough estimation of when the LF river busts open and muddies the Rainy.    Can you (or anyone) comment on when that's looking likely to happen? anyone know when the river cleared the Frontier landing? I think you said that happening gives a 1-to-2 week notice on the LF breakup.

recommendation for first timers to northern Minnesota?  we need decent lodging, boat or sitontop kayak, smallmouth is our favorite but we will fish for anything that will bite artificial.  thanks in advance for any help.

My Alaska trip fell through, so I'm thinking having never been to Minnesota that should be my destination. thinking a week in august. Probably start International Falls or Duluth. We need a resort with sit on top kayaks or aluminum boats, comfortable lodging without being plush and not ripping our heads off pricewise.  We will target Smallmouth, but if it will hit a lure I will fish for it. any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Went out of Stoney Point sunday morning.  FYI Watch for deer almost smoked a few on the 20 mph section coming back into the access!  There is an ice heave forming off of the rocks going straight north.  If you want to fish Paris Trench people were crossing instantly using boards.  We weren't gutsy/brave/stupid enough to cross there since we were pulling a trailer behind a four wheeler and had 3 of us with all our gear.  The ice was sketchy from access to point at the point the ice heave goes a little further away from shore and it allows you some room to avoid the point's tip.  There is open water immediately around the point tip but ice looks great if you follow the tracks and avoid huging the tip.  We couldn't find a place to cross the ice heave to get to Paris Trench so we were going to try a few spots further north since we could see a few groups set up north a ways.  About 5.5 miles north of the access the ice heave quits and you can cross it without any worries.  Since we could cross the GPS spot we wanted to fish was only 2.5 miles away and we fished there.  Out in the middle we had 26-28" of ice and barely made it through.  While fishing a plane landed on the lake and a 1/2 ton extended cab pickup came from the NE some where, it was too foggy misty to see where and we didn't see him leave.  Coming back from Stoney Point's Tip to the access was very sketchy.  Made me nervous since there was a lot of slush and water but ice held us up.  If you plan on going out next weekend you may need to find a different access, or atleast I would!  Talked to a guy who came in behind us, they crossed the ice heave at the access using boards how they did and they said it was very slow and only got two.

I've got a 53" ski...41"pike and an accidental 22" smallie on V. I have caught a 31" eye but not on vermilion.  Id  like to get a 30 out of there.
