There was a lot of slush on fish in a lot of areas before our big snow fall and now with all the snow it may make more. Snowmobile is the best way to travel now. Wheelers will get you to some spots but a sled would be better.

Walking a house out could be a lot of work now depending on where you want to go.

Frank and JR, and I went on our sleds for dinner and fish was all slush all over. It will take awhile for me to even try after tonight. Slush every where confused.gif. If you stay on the trails you should be ok but if you go off you are in for a work out. four wheelers are not recommended Sleds only.

If you can get on some old tracks and old fishing areas that slushed up and froze after out first big snow you might be OK.

Accessing from Hi Banks is your best bet, from there get onto the sled tracks that travel from the flowage to the Eagles Nest, then branch off to your fishing spots.

At any rate you'll get into slush at some point.

Plenty of ice on Fish lake its just that the top layer isn't thick enough to hold a person up. I walked off a snowmobile path out of the public landing and fell into about 6 inches of water! Plenty of snowmobiles going over it and some 4 wheelers just plowing through it. Hopefully it will get cold enough to freeze all of it.

Sounds like cold and then some rain. Wish it was rain then cold. This years weather really screwed up some good fishin we had going.

has anyone been out the last couple of days? hoping that the warm weather melted off some of the snow and make traveling across the lake better. hate to think the only fishing trip I will get to make was the one to LOW last weekend. did well up there, 5 of us took home 24 eyes and sauger, lost a few and threw back alot of small ones.

Fish Lake still has a lot of slush all over the place. Narrows is ok and stay on snowmobile trail or wheeler trails or you will surely be stuck in a wheeler. A snowmobile should be ok.

More snow talk now so it wont help any. Lets hope the weather guessers are wrong again and we get some below O weather.

Just wanted to give an update. Last Sunday I got out to Fish Lake at around 700am...it was pretty slow for most of the day, and then it happened. I finally got to really see how my new Marcum worked because it was flashing like crazy! It was a feeding frenzy...I caught my limit of crappies in the early evening. The lake was slushy in some places, but as long as you traveled on the tracks it wasn't that bad...worth the work after that night. Crappie minnows and orange color was the bait of lure of choice in about 10 FOW!! I'll be out again this weekend, it was a blast on a nice sunny day.

Hey guys I was just informed by my roomate that there was a thread about fish lake. I have been out there quite a bit recently. I was actually out tonight and took home 9 crappies. I have been fishing by the dam using glow jigs with crappie minnows with good outcomes. There have been a lot of full size vehicles driving out in this area. I only usually get out in the afternoon and just pound them between 4-545. If any of you see a big black frabil xl house out there don't be afraid to stop by and say hi, the name is Joel.

Thanks Joel for the response...we may go out to Fish tomorrow from 230-700. It's a toss up, we may go to Grand? We'll give an update regardless.

The Dam is located at the end of the black top on the Fish lake dam road. It is the public access to the lake. Look for the brown DNR Public Access signs. Do you know where the Fish lake dam road is located?

yea, i can see where the public access is located on the map. i've always gone off hi-banks, so i've never been far enough down the road to see the public access yet!

Yeah just like these guys said, it's right off the public access on fish lake dam road. We are heading out there on Sunday to pound some crappies. I'll have to pick up some orange jigs and see how they work. Anyone have a link to a map of the lake? Where are the hi-banks and other spots people fish on the lake?

The highbanks are right where crappie village is just out of the narrows from highbanks resort to the right. If you drive to the d a m you will look down onto the lake from them.

I JUST found this forum and it is going to really help me out! I recently moved to Duluth and wanted to go fishing but had NO idea where to start. I'm going to try to get out to the dam area tomorrow/Sunday.

Sounds like Joel-"Bonstrosity" is going to be out there as well. Joel, if you see this my name is Jim and I'll try to stop and say hello.

I am a relative rookie when it comes to icefishing and don't have a power or hand auger till my father in law gets me his old one. I'll try to spud a hole but I may be in for some sore arms, does anyone know how thick the ice is on the lake near the dam area?

Thanks,

Jim

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
