Resort for families and ice fishing

2 posts in this topic

Hey all,

I'm looking for a resort in the area to visit this winter with a few other families.

The wish list:

- outdoor or indoor activities with the kids

- a bar/grill on site (so the parents can coax the grandparents into babysitting while we enjoy a few libations)

- good ice fishing - we'll bring our portables if no houses for rent

Thanks for any help!

WE actually don't have many resorts that operate during the winter months. The ones that do really don't offer any programming for families or kids because it's a down time. We won't have anyone who rents fish houses, but there's still hope. I would suggest contacting In-We-Go resort on 8th crow wing. They have a motel connected to the resort that they operate year-round. There are a few local taverns in Nevis and Dorset that should entertain you for the evening when the sitter's around. As for ice house rentals, sorry, there aren't any in Nevis or Park Rapids, but Walker is about 20 minutes and you could rent a house on Leech. Otherwise, you can always take a portable out on 8th, it's a good lake. There are a ton of fishing opportunities in the area and you can always get in touch with me regarding some ideas/ pointers or guiding.

I live north of the metro in East Bethel so not to familiar with south metro lakes. Minnetonka, Prior, Medicine, seem to have some popularity. On the north side the Chisago City area Green, Chisago, Lindstrom, Center, and Comfort are usually productive for pan fish, northern, walleye and summer bass. Big Marine also holds some nice crappie to 14" and larger Sunfish. Forest Lake and a bit west Coon lake also holds a variety. Last year I did a fairly extensive look at DNR lake surveys within a 3 hour drive north of the metro and came up with this list that looked promising for Walleye. I have fished a few during summer, but not all, with fair success.  Here is the list. This is typically what you will find on the DNR Lake Finder site only their survey will be for all species. I just took the walleye info. The Navionics link BringAnExtension listed should give you great contours for any of the lakes your interested in.
