if the Twins signed Mike Sweeney? I see the Royals aren't interested, as a strict DH, can't be any worse than Rondell White. More than likely, 20 HR potential, as long as they aren't like the Royals and think he still has 1st base potential- THAT only adds to his DL time. I think he'd be a great fit in the clubhouse

Sweeney would be a great fit for the Twins as a DH only. The second you put him out in the field he'll end up on the DL for 3-4 months. If healthy all year I would say 20 HR's would be easily attained for him and would expect more like 30+ type of production out of him. He's always been a really good player but is injured WAY too often. I would take a shot with him at DH.

The only way I take Sweeney is with a one year minimum contract. Possibly a minor league one. He is a stretch to play any position other than DH. He doesn't have alot of value. Someone will take a flyer if he is open minded. If not, he will retire.

I really honestly want JASON KUBEL as our everyday DH though. He is gonna have a breakout year this year. Look for him to hit in the .260-.290 range and jack 20 or better, might drive in close to 100 if he gets the at-bats. For all this talk we have had of top prospects, Kubel was a top 10 hitting prospect in all of baseball until he got hurt. When healthy and now that he has adjusted to MLB pitching, he can and will rake.

I would take a flyer on Sweeney with a 1yr deal. If he explodes then you lose him to free agency next year when he wants big bucks. If Sweeney bats left handed he is still better than Rondell White.

I think the Twins still need a CF. They have 4 OF right now in Monroe, Cuddyer, Kubel, and Young. Here are some free agents that could fill the CF position.

Mike Cameron,Darin Erstad,Kenny Lofton,Corey Patterson,and Scott Podsednik

Possible DH

Mike Sweeney,Sean Casey,Jeff Conine,Tony Clark,Erubiel Durazo,Robert Fick,Shea Hilenbrand,Eric Hinske,Ryan Klesko,

Russel Branyan,Morgan Ensberg,Corey Koskie,Barry Bonds,Luis Gonzalez,Shawn Green,Geoff Jenkins,Reggie Sanders,Sammy Sosa

Brad Wilkerson,Preston Wilson, and Mike Piazza

I see all these players siging 1yr deals with teams. I don't see the Twins being in the race this year so if they sign one of these guys and then deal him at the deadline and get a prospect in return that would be fine with me. Sorry to jack the thread.

I honestly think Jason Kubel needs to see an eye doctor, he squints worse than G W, and he seems to not be able to see the ball very good.

Sweeney wouldn't be the worst pickup but he can't do much more than play first and DH and that isn't the track record of players who get a sniff with the Twins.]

Kubel is a spare slap. At the end of the 2008 season, he'll be next Lew Ford who never reached expectations.

i think he would be a great player for the twins. Would fit in well with the guys that we still have here in the system.

The twins have to get a CF, and we need to get someone to play short.

were there ever large lew ford expectations??? even after his decent year, the majority of people couldnt have expected him to exceed or even match that output.

You just remember him going down in 3 pitches in a big spot in the playoffs against the yankees. There is nothing else to base that opinion on. He has solid numbers for a guy that hasn't been given a starting job yet. Even top prospects usually take a few years in the bigs before they really produce. Compare his numbers to Cuddyer or Morneau when they first came up. Kubel's are better in most categories.

He will be a cornerstone of this team for years. Bring his name up in trade talks to other teams and he would bring a nice return. This isn't some scrub like Jason Tyner we are talking about here.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
