Ice Reports?

4 posts in this topic

A lady I work with and her husband are chomping at the bit to get the wheel house out for a weekend. With the snow the last couple of weeks lakes and travel around west central and central mn is pretty tough. I was wondering if the ice is ready for a wheel house pulled by a atv and if snow conditions would allow them to get the house on the lake or not. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.....

Hi,

It's only Tuesday and conditions will improve daily.

You dont mention where they plan on going out of so its

hard to give a real good response.

Just keep checking here as the week continues. Up to

date reports will be forth coming.

Finally, call the resort or road operator your friends

will be using, they will give them the current info.

There is not much snow on Lake of the Woods and the ice

is coming along nicely.

Sorry I did not give any specifics I was in a hurry when I left that post. They are looking for a resort or road operator to use. They are not picky. As a matter of fact I think if a resort forgot to drain the swimming pool this summer they would probably settle for that. The guy only gets one weekend a month off so they are pretty itchy. Thanks for the feedback.

Wheelers Point is a great access to LOW. The road is maintained and marked by Adrians over 4 mile bay and across Pine Island. Riverbend also maintains there roads once over Pine as well. Last year the access fee was $7, might be up a little this year with the cost of fuel, but its still a bargain if you're pulling your own house and driving your own vehicle. You will need to stop at Adrians and pay the fee and they will direct you to the access. They do one fine job for all of us fisherpeople. Good luck and hang on. Bill

How do you even get on this lake to ice fish?  Seems to be surrounded by Private land.

Well Friday was a little slow picked up some nice gills here and there no crappies. Sat morning picked up a couple 10 inch gills and a couple more for the bucket here and there. Sat night 930 the crappies came through I caught 17 biggest was 12. Sunday picked a few more gills up for the bucket before heading off to a different lake for walleye. again fish wanted nothing to do with minnows only caught one with them. All other fish caught on a tungsten orange and green glow tipped with only a wax worm.   we were in 12 fow the sunfish were 2 off the bottom crappie cruising 4 off bottom Side note tried walleye tonight missed 3 of them! Now I remember why I don't walleye fish much stupid things

I had the showdown as a hole hopping sonar but found I used my LX5 a lot more.  I went to the 7 and did not like it because it was bulky and hard to get used to both hopping holes and room inside one man Frabile.  Sold the 7 and bought another LX5 and do not see me going back to any other.  I have a wheel house and found is the only time I used the 7.  If you do a lot of fishing outside and like to move around.  I would stick with the 5, I now own two of them and don't see me using anything else.

I'm thinking the opposite could be happening. Some people are doing fairly good and they are not saying anything. Last year a person I know did real good over 1 mile from anyone and called one friend with the coordinates of where to meet him in 2 days. He got back in 2 days and found over 30 wheelhouses right on his coordinates. His one friend that he told had then told another friend who told another friend and on and on. The key to ice fishing URL has always been to stay away from the crowds but now a good report brings in a crowd. Some of the business have decided that fewer fishermen having good fishing could be a better long term plan then many fishermen having poor fishing so they are not reporting good fishing.   Me, I think the fishing this winter is far better then last winter. Most of the people fishing URL now learned to fish URL by going deeper and deeper for the crappies. Before the crappie boom very few fishermen went deeper then 10 feet of water for walleyes. If we got into crappies or perch we knew we were too deep for the best walleye fishing. Most of my fishing this year has been in 8 feet of water or less. But also I'm standing outside and not sitting in a house. On URL you will usually get 4 or 5 times more fish standing outside or in a portable then you will in a house. I think it is from the noise or vibrations. shaky and Doc could set their house in 6 feet of water and do very good but they fished very quietly.  When fishing they had no radio or TV turned on, no generator, stepped softly and talk in whispers,,,,and they caught a lot of fish. I've sat with a camera and watched walleyes spook away when the heating stove ignited, when I dropped a rod on the floor and when I slid a chair across the floor. That is why all of our rental houses had a rubberized floor, to dampen the noise. Every year more and more people are fishing in houses rather then standing outside or in portables and I wonder if that isn't going to change how many fish are caught for each hour of "fishing pressure"/angler hours.  Sure it is nice to sit in a warm house watching TV while fishing but at least on URL I think you will also catch less fish. It will interesting to see if the DNR creel census starts to show a lower catch per hour as the percentage of people fishing from wheelhouses increases.
