the ice is in bad shape out there. i went out this afternoon and got about ten feet out in one of the bays and started poking around. 2 inches at best. i tip toed back and got on from a different spot found 3 inches and everything had about 6 inches of slush. wish that snow would have held off. if i were you i wouldnt go anywhere near the main lake. also the west part of the bay near the main lake was 2 inches at best.

Thats were I was thinking of going sunday afternoon Thaks for the report. Maybe we could get together and try out carls sunday afternoon if you are interested, provided the ice is safe. I've heard a few reports of guys being out there its alot shallower might have froze over better before all the snow. Rather go out with somebody then by myself this time of year.

Went out and checked Paradise bay tonight. There was one portable out there. Guy happended to be going back out to the portable when I got there and he said there is about 3" of ice out there, with some slushy spots. He said there were about 10 guys out there this afternoon. Might try it tomorrow night. Anyone else have anything to report?

2-3"slush on top of 4-6" good ice on upper prior as of 30 minutes ago. Just finished loading the gear in my truck and headed back down to fish. I have no idea what it is like around the launch, as I access the lake on private property. I did see two guys ntrekking out to Twin Island while i was out there.

I was on upper prior last night. It was still slushy in spots, the ice was 4-6". I finally got off the lake at 10 last night. Ended the night with 3 crappies and 2 walleyes. Had fish coming thru all night, but they were very finicky.

Tonight I fished with 2 other guys on lower prior and we got 3 eye's. All caught dead sticking fatheads. Not as much slush and better ice where we were, ice was 5". Still have to be checking the whole time you go out. There were 2-3 wheelers and I saw one sled cross the lake!! Personally it's too early for any vehicles. With the cold temps it won't be long, she was poppin last night pretty good!

Was over at a store in Lakeville this afternoon. From the chatter I overheard from several employees, there should be plenty of company out there the next few days!!! I haven't been on the lake yet, will be very soon, but reliable reports are along the weed edge in Paradise. grin.gif

I went out to Prior Lake this afternoon. Everyone else did too. The fishing was slow. Little tiny sunfish. Little tiny crappies.

out on prior saturday, and sunday. did real well on saturday, 8 fish shy of limiting out on nice crappies between 3 guys, sunday was much slower. some guy on sunday was driving his truck about 20 mph out on the lake tonight we didnt want to get near him but we moved ot another spot and he came flying in about 10 feet away from our house going about 20 mph and we were only sitting on 5 INCHES OF ICE.... i couldnt believe that someone would even have the guts to even drive within ten feet of a house, let alone get my almost running out of my house because the ice was sinking and the water was coming up form my holes... i think if this guy is on here i think you have some re evaluating to do... the ice is for everyone not for your 30 year old pick up truck to ruin the ice...because if he would have gone in it would have been a big mess where everyone fishes....

Definitely have to be smart out there. Just because we haven't been over freezing in a while doesn't mean the ice is good for cars, much less trucks! Not to mention it's common courtesy to not drive right next to where people are set up.

Was out off of sportsmans sat, along with everyone else. What a great day to be on the ice! We only pulled up a few small crappies, but put the camera down for a while and saw a little bit of everything cruise by. Marked fish all day but had trouble getting them to bite.

We also saw someone with a truck out there... confused.gif

I went out by the island Friday around 10pm and caught a lot of crappies until about 2am. The bite was really strong right around 1am. I didn't see anyone driving out there but they are crazy!! Does anyone know what is the deal with not being able to park on the beach this year? MAll I can think is it has something to do with those 8 or so vehicles that went through last year.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
