This weekend is normally my first weekend to go up north and start hitting the ice, but this year it's delayed by a week because my wife is working. It's killing me to wait an extra week. grin.gif

Yeah I've definitely been thinking about it. Well, we could probably find 3" of ice without traveling too far this weekend, but I'd rather go a bit further and be comfortable out there.

was in hibbing last weekend. the smaller lakes on the chain were half frozen thursday, frozen over on friday, and people were ice skating close to shore on saturday. my uncle said there were guys all over the lake fishing on tuesday. the larger lake, 1000 acres or so, is still only half frozen due to high winds as of this morning.

i would imagine just about any smaller lake you can find will be more than safe for foot travel and many of those would be safe for ATV travel by this weekend. they have had many nights below zero this week.

best of luck up there.

Planning on heading up to Vermillion tomorrow night to catch a morning bite laugh.gif, an afternoon buzz crazy.gif, and then the evening bite laugh.gif, but looking at the weather reports, I might just wait until next weekend. frown.gif Anybody else heading up that way this weekend?

My stuff is ready, I'm planning on driving to the Brainerd Area tomorrow to check things out. Hopefully the expected snows don't put a damper on things.

I read that they are going to close the walleye season on 9-5-17 regardless of whether the state's quota is met. Fall fishing gone again........    With these highly restrictive regulations that favor ones desire over another's desire will start to pit fisherman against each other.   If we need to have less fishing pressure on the lake then maybe we should close down all of the public launches. Then some would fish other lakes but the balance would be forced to pay to launch at a resort since we are worried about them. Then that extra business could cover their losses if we eliminate live bait which would hurt their fishing launch business. Maybe we should just ban all paid launch fishing and ban all paid guide service on the lake which just brings additional undesired fishing pressure. Maybe restrict the number of hours any one person is allowed to fish the lake throughout the year.   Heck, I would even favor closing walleye fishing for 3 or 4 years straight if that would get us back to some normal regulations.   Yes, these outbursts are why I do not text any more after 10:00 at night. Time to give up the keyboard also.......

I would look in holes and flats near them.  Deep depends on how shallow the section that you're fishing is.
