Alex or Shammy ice report

Recommended Posts

Blueport is not Blueport anymore, it is back to the old name The Casteway... Ice seams to be varying from place to place alot like anywhere from 7 to 12. I have not saw anyone driving out over there, and I wouldnt right now. I have been catching fish but not over there as most of the time they are alittle too small but a few keepers here and there. Waterfowl kid who are you? I live right by lincoln and fish alot... I will be on the ice everynight this week!

sorry scotty but i have not fished since sunday. this week has been very hectic to say the least in school. i am planning on leaving school at noon on friday to try and catch some crappies on alex. i really want to go for walleyes but i don't have a wheeler or snomobile so i either have to walk across the lake or drive the truck so it looks like im stuck in the bay for now

Bah...

You're young enough to drag for long distances... Last year I had a trip up to Alex where I dragged 2 sleds a little over a mile! (I'm 32) Got to fish out of the crowd, and hit some nice eyes for the effort!

Say, this winter I'm parking my wheel house (Converted Camper into an ice house) on Mille Lacs...

But when this season is over my contact up there is retiring... I'm wondering if you guys know of a place I can keep the camper cheap to use for the summer up around Alex. (What's up with the camper village on the North end... Or the place by the west landing?)

I don't need much... (It's all DC, so I don't even need electric hook ups) Just a porta potty on premesis, a place to park the truck and boat trailer... And a communal fire pit or something like that would be a bonus.

I don't need any kind of marina slip... I'm fine with Launching and landing...

My buddy who said I could keep it at his lake lot for $200 changed his mind, so now I'm in a scratch... And I know that cheap places like I'm seeking tend to fill up quick, once it's time to pull the houses off the ice.

Dances, the place on the north side of the lake used to and still may be called Hershey's. Maybe you can find it in the book, or the Lakeside store owners could probably get their number.

Ah... So they are at least a camper park...

I always wondered if that was the case or if it was just "Some guy who let his buddies park there."

I actually have In-Laws who live on Alex and Fish trap... Unfortunately my wife lost touch with them long ago, so at the moment you guys and the Lakeside station are my only info connection!

Thanks again!

Dances, are you looking to keep it right on the lake? I live right on Hwy 10 only a mile from Shamineau

It would be nice to be able to keep it on the lake etc...

But my big thing is having a cheap place to sleep and camp during the summer... I often find myself night fishing Alex... And since I live in St. Cloud... I run into the issue of being out there on a bite of whatever degree... It's 12:30 am...

And I'm thinking.... "Hmm... Half hour to get in, land the boat and secure everything for the ride home... Hour drive home... Hour to wind down before I can crash out... Making it 2:00 am...

It would be nice to just simply get off the lake and crash out at 2:00 am etc..

But at the same time... I want to be able to get away and camp for a weekend here and there etc...

Do you run a campground?

I've never actually fished Sham... But I've always wanted to add it to my repretoir.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
