Did some more checking today. Was surprised at what I found. For the most part, we are seeing about 14"- 17" but there is still some areas of slush and some double ice but with this cold snap coming, things should firm up nicely. I did not check that area that was only at 4" last week so I wouldn't take off with my truck just yet.

If you will be fishing the East end and have snowmobiles or ATVs try the reefs out in Big Bay.

22' to 32' of water on the edges of the reefs.

Use tip-ups baited with small to medium sized suckers and small jigging spoons or 1/8 oz. jigs baited with a crappie minnow. Gold has been my best color this week.

Mornings up until around 1:pm has been the best bite in the area that I have been fishing, but have had a decent bite all day at times.

I fished Saturday and Sunday mostly on the east end. I used a wheeler to get around with my fish trap...worked pretty well as the snow was hardpacked and not very deep. I did not run into any slush. Fishing was slow for me, did a lot of prospecting as I don't know the lake very well. Did catch most of my fish in 27 to 28 FOW. I had a good time...could have been a little warmer though.

Fl Sniper,

What type of setups did you get your fish on?

Cliff - Do you have your sleeper out yet and are we set for Feb. 2nd? -Jason

I caught all my fish on a #8 glo perch northland forage minnow jig with a small crappie minnow hooked up thru the anus and out the side of the minnow. All fish caught jigging near the bottom. All fish that bit were aggresive. Only had a few lookers that wouldn't bite.

You must be flippin nuts, or seriously short on fishin. Holy cr@p, it was cold out there. Unless you figured out how to put your 4 wheeler inside the fishhouse. And drive around that way. Glad to hear that you enjoyed yourself. I saw the forecast and told the wife, get some paint and we will get her painting project done so we can go to LOW tommorrow for 3 days.

-28 when I woke up Saturday...-32 on Sunday morning. I don't mind the cold so much....bothers me that it reaks havoc on the machines. I had a planned trip to visit some friends who live on the lake this past weekend...I couldn't change the date because of the weather...so I just made the most of it. I sit inside everyday for work...I like to get outside no matter what the conditions are when I can. It would have been nice if it was warmer because I could have hit more spots quicker, and the equipment would have worked better. But sitting inside the trap with the heater on isn't much different then a day that's 20 degrees warmer...just getting to that point is more work. If lived up there all the time I'd of probably worked on the honey-doo list myself :).

  • 2 weeks later...

How much ice is there on the lake out from Mckinley park? Is there truck travel out there yet?

There is almost 24 inches of ice.

Lots of truck traffic on the lake now. Easy travel.

Thanks for the info. Any idea what depth is working better than others? We fished out there around Christmas in about 20 fow.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
