I cant wait till ice up. this is a great lake for multi species and an all around good time. it seems to me that anywhere i fish in the winter seems to be good, even of structure and the bars. I just usually avoid the shallows and the over persued avearage scunnies. It wont be long and i will be visitin to see if there is any walts or crappies left. Good fishin to all!!!

So has any ice formed on Minnewaska yet? I am guessing it won't be long. I am coming up on Friday night. We still have a boat lift in the water and I am wondering if I will have to chop it out of the ice on Saturday.

See ya soon Waska.

Heya fishing. I hope it won't be long. I am off to pick up my new 4-wheeler this morning and then it is time to start working on the house. I sure wish that I grew corn and raised cattle so I had more money to spend and more time to fish grin.gif Stop by some time and we will swap lies.

Yeah, It's always fun to keep people guessing. wink.gif Sounds like your son-in-law talked you into one too!! What did you get? I went with the Can Am 500. Bought it really cheap. grin.gif Is the lake level still low? Heard you had some trouble with the pontoon this summer. How do you think that could effect the fishing? The drought was really tough on us little farmers down here.

Ten dollar beans, eight dollar wheat and skyrocketing corn prices don't help my pocketbook so I had to settle for the bottom of the line Suzuki King Quad 700. I think ice fishing will be great. I didn't get out to do much fall fishing so I hope ice fishing is good. I see that Bob's bay was starting to ice over this afternoon so maybe sooooon!!!!

I would love to put tracks on the new quad but I think I will give it a try without them for a year and see how it goes. That being said, maybe if I buy tracks it won't snow!!!

The lake froze was iced over as far as I could see at day break but there was lots of steam out in the middle. That stopped about 10:00 am. I asked the wife if she saw anyone fishing when she came home from work but she didn't. I bet somebody will be out in front of the beach tomorrow. I had a CRP day today. Cooperative rest program grin.gif

Waskawood,

Did you have another Cooperative Rest Period again today? I think I saw you walking around Ted's looking at snowmobiles. Could I get a good reference from you to be able to get your job when you retire? Us poor sole proprietors have to work 24 7 365.

Hey waskawood,

How much ice do you think there is out from your place? Do you go out on early ice with a portable? Or do you wait until you can pull your wheel house out with the 4 wheeler? I will be up there December 22 and 23. I will have to stop by and check out your icehouse, it looks like a nice one.

Later,

Nate

Hey Nate. I am only guessing but I would think there has to be at least 6 inches. I was going to take the portable out this weekend but with 10+ inches of snow in the forecast I am going to batton down the hatches and stay put. I hope it doesn't screw up the ice for the whole winter!!!Stop by anytime. It will be out front or down in Bob's bay.

Nate,

2 permenents down towards Bob's bay. Starting to see 4 wheelers out there this morning but I am waiting until after the snow. It is just starting now. The lady at the bait shop says there is a good 5 inches of ice. 3 portables out from Starbuck park. It was snowing so hard I couldn't tell if they had 4 wheelers.

Checked out Starbuck beach on Thu. afternoon & found 3 inches. Decided to head north to west end Reno & found 4 1/2. Went back on Friday & measured 5". Eyes are on the small side but were really good for dinner today. Did better in shallows than in deeper water although I had to battle off those pesky little Perch.

  • 2 weeks later...

So how has the fishing been? I haven't heard many reports. I am guessing everyone is too busy catching fish. I will be coming up on the 21st and am planning on fishing Saturday and Sunday. How much ice is there? How much snow? Are people driving on the lake yet?

It looks like a car out in front of your parents place tonite. I guess there was a full size pickup out from the school house. I have heard up to 11 inches with lots of slush in areas. Going to put mine out Friday. Another CRP day. Sure wish I farmed grin.gif

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.

    • CigarGuy
