Late Season, or close to it. Reports?

3 posts in this topic

Now that it is basically late season(for our zone anyways, we're done in two weeks), what are the reports?

Here in central WI it has been really slow for at least two weeks. Seeing a lot less birds than earlier in the season, though some bigger flocks are moving through. Haven't been out since last week, when we saw a half dozen flocks of bluebills and some super high cans each day, but that was pretty much it besides a few mallards here and there and some mixed ducks. Shot a few mallards and goldeneye and that was it. My buddies went out friday, got skunked, and again yesterday with only shots at one flock(two mallards killed). For us at least it has slowed way down. Kinda dampens the spirits, even though we have a few weeks left.

How's everyone else doing?

Ducks in SW Mn are feast or famine. When you see them it's in the hundreds........when you see them.

Geese, however, are everywhere. If the weather holds true we could have a very interesting December goose season.

Drove from Fergus Falls to Wheaton to Browns Valley to Morris to Hoffman today. Most potholes and even larger bodies of water frozen. Some Mallards here and there in the fields, but not many. Abundant geese. Few coots. That is all. This may be my last season. I've had it. mad.gif

My buddy has the 5 w/GPS. When you combine it with a lakemap chip it's a really sweet set-up for ice fishing as you can pinpoint spots on lakes and mark your location for the next time you're out.  I don't know anything about the sonar vs. flasher issue or if there is a slight delay. All I know is I want one.   Also, there are down imaging and side imaging versions available, and ones with and without GPS. Be sure you take that into consideration when you're shopping. I've gotten excited about some pretty good deals I've seen on the Helix 5, only to realize it doesn't have GPS. If you're going to use your for ice fishing I think you would want the GPS version.

Whenever I want to take a kid out fishing and keep them entertained, then I always go to Kelly Dudley.  In the summer, it is impossible not to catch a steady stream of sunfish.  I have never tried it in the winter, but suspect it would be a good place to keep an eight year old busy.   If you go out, make absolutely sure to bring ice cleats.   There is an indoor fish camp going on in Faribault this weekend.  http://www.maxsolutionsonline.com/cityoffaribault/Customer/ActivityDetail.aspx

Are you looking for this summer?   Are you looking for cabin type resorts, camping, tent/RV?   Here is a place to start:   http://business.parkrapids.com/list/category/resort-cabin-327   I live in the area so haven't spent to much time at different resorts but I've always liked R&D Resort on Straight Lake in Osage, MN which is only 8 miles from Park Rapids. Isle O' Dreams is another very cool place to stay.

Lots of water on the ice now where people have their houses. Took my house off yesterday and the plowed roads were pretty slushy already.
