Report Saturday 10/20

Paul Waldowski

Recommended Posts

Was able to get out for a couple of hours last night, taking a younger couple that was staying here at the resort on the long run to the west side to see what was going over there.

We had our lines in the water about 8:00 and ended up pulling them out around 10:00. We managed 14 or 15 fish and missed a couple more. All fish came off of the inside of the weedline in 4-6 feet of water and all fish came on a Firetiger Rap. We tried several colors, as well as different lure styles and they wanted no part of any of it.

This turned out to be the strangest night so far this fall, as our biggest fish was 20 inches, with the majority of them being in that 16-18 inch range. smile.gif

Water temp ranged from 52-53 degrees and speed was 1.5-1.7 mph

Great Report! That's quite a flurry of active fish. We also fished the West side and caught all our fish in 4-7' of water. All but one of our fish were caught on Husky Jerks and 90% were caught on purple perch. We fished from 7-1:30 and ended the night with 25 walleyes and a northern. It was our best big fish night so far with several fish over 25 inches and the largest right at 28". Our speed was 1.1-1.3 mph. I think our best bite was probably from 9-11 and we had the same water temperature as Paul mentioned.

I was up on Thursday night and we fished the north end staying right on top of the break for the most part in around 7-8 fow. We gave it a valient effort, but with the rain and the wind, we gave up after about 3 hours. We did manage one nice eye at 26" on a hot tiger rap, can't remember whether it was a floater or a husky. We missed one other shot because the guy who got the bite was emptying the lower unit off the side of the boat when he got the bite. The water temps up there were in the 52-53 range. We had a lot of trouble keeping the boat in a consistent speed and the one eye came when we were going into the wind at 1.6 mph.

Polarsusd81, I'm sure he didn't want to get the lower unit hung up. blush.gif

Paul, DHenry, fantastic reports! My boat decided to try the SW rocks. Last year at this time we did very well over there. Had one go right at 7pm and thought It was going to be good. Over the next 2.5 hours we produced one other bite and nothing in the boat. Baitfish were off the edges in 12-18 feet of water and it was flat calm. Hindsight should have ran SR's or Taildancers off the drop. Talk about humbling. Just before we ventured to our next spot I got a call from DHenry and he saved the night for us. We managed 7 fish from 16 to 23 from 10ish to 11:30. Paul, strange indeed, we caught fish on several different colors and none stood out for us, favorite being Rainbow HJ. D, we had to cut out early with fish still coming in the boat. My wife flew to Boston on business and I needed to drive her to the airport EARLY. In bed at 1:30am and up at 3:30am to drive her down crazy.gif I need a nap.......

man, you guys did fantastic! talk about humbling, im seriously doubting my fishing abilities! i can rationalize it away as being a life experience in learning insight into the old corporate world and the new corporate world. all i can say is old or new, its still the corporate world...not condusive to concentrating on the walleye. we trolled from 6 to almost 10 from rocky reef to indian point. i may have had 1 swing-n-miss, but cant even be certain. it is reasurring to hear others doing so well. i will be up there thursday night this week and saturday night again. thursday night is the night all walleye fisherman wait for every year! its more important than opener.

thanks again for all your sharing.

Don't be afraid to fish when the moon isn't full. I think the fishing is just as good if not better during other times, especially if the weather is good,as there is a lot less boat traffic. Also, as we get into November the fishing gets a lot easier as the weeds die off. Some of our best nights are when it is pitch dark. The key to catching fish this time of year is speed. You really need to keep your eye on your gps speed....if you're going too fast you won't get bit.

I was also out on Saturday night with my partner. We left Hunters around 7pm or so and trolled up to Fisher's and down to Liberty Beach. What a wonderful night weather wise! A couple sprinkles of rain here and there, but overall a beautiful night. We ended up netting 8 fish all over 20". Our biggest was 26". All caught in 6-8 feet of water using mostly husky jerks in firetiger and blue/silver colors. (the only reason blue/silver came out of the tackle box was we lost a few in the rocks). Not bad. Wished I would have stayed up there for the perch this afternoon, however the duty of daily life calls! Good luck to all on full moon next weekend. It should be a lot of fun!

jigs.

That bite was pretty good at that spot for a couple of hours. The other think I noticed last night was that we had a lot of short bites (probably 10=-12) or nudges last night. It got a little frustrating at times. I'm feeling it today as well, but it was worth it. There is a lot of good fishing coming up over the next 40 days. The bite seems to be shaping up similarly to last year. I'm glad we were able to communicate what was going on. It's good to have this website to meet other so we can trade and share info. on and off the water.

i watched our speed as much as i could. we were going anywhere from 1.5mph to 2.2 sometimes. that doesnt count turns. thursday i will try to keep it lower and am looking forward to nothing but concentrated fishing. i wish i could add something in return for all the advice ive gained from everyone, but i feel like the novice here.

ah, one thing i learned on saturday...2 lb test, 3/4 lb diameter crystal fire line is almost as bad for tangles as the old spyder wire. i spooled up my 4.5' ultralite with it for perch. i have some 1/32 or 1/64 ounce jigs w/chrome heads, a little while hair and some silver streamers. those tipped with a crappie minnow thru the lips under a weighted bobber have worked great for crappies in the spring. i was hoping it might work for the big perch after reading a post on here. didnt try for too long though...was anxious to go for walleyes.

My guess is that by next weekend the speed is going to have to be from about 1.0-1.2. I don't think we went over 1.7 this weekend and only got bit when we were below 1.5.

thanks, thats probably why we didnt get anything other than the one possible hit and miss. i noticed one boat really close to shore, wonder if that was paul? one of my fishing buddies told me about a similar spot in cove bay. ive never been to the exact spot but might check it out in daylight on thursday to get a track on the gps thru the channel into cove. there and the southwest side look to be the spots we'll concentrate on...theres still the wind factor, always a variable.

maybe i should be using bigger baits too? ive been using HJ11's and SR5's.

when we got back to the landing, there was a security guard from the casino there who stops there all the time to check out fishing. he showed my a walleye with his flashlight about 15 or 20' away from the ramp, right alongside the dock. we had everthing packed up and it wasnt a keeper anyway...too big... he also said somebody caught lots of walleyes recently fishing right off the dock. too bad we didnt realize that on the way out...

tuff,

Yep that would have been me. We were the boat that was inside everyone else. I couldn't figure out what they were doing out in that deep water grin.gif

A buddy of mine and myself were also on the west side Sat. evening. We ended up with 11 eyes, all between 18 and 26. Also 2 pike, both 29". Speed was always 1.3-1.4-- 8 to 11 feet. Had to battle the weeds some but we couldn't get any bites any shallower. Paul, were you by the Casino landing or more by the Garrison landing? I think I might know what boat you were in.

I battled the conditions thursday and friday all day, it was tough even the perch were not as cooperative as they should be this time of year. Did get a limit of 10-12 incher perch fri. on the rocks in 4-6ft. Gamefish were VERY POOR FOR ME this weekend. maybe next year. grin.gif

Question for Paul and others fishing in 4'+ of water. Do you mark many fish or do you just try it and see how it goes because you assume the fish are there?

its pretty hard for a locator to pick up anything but the bottom that shallow. the cone of the transducer doesnt have enough distance to spread out to cover more bottom. the deeper you are the more bottom you see on the graph/locator.

We were closer to the casino landing.

You will not mark fish in 4 feet of water. You are only looking at about a 1 foot diameter cone.

What's the way to get some eye's during the day? Are they biting on leaches or just minnows now? I'll be heading up to Appeldorns on Fri. afternoon and will pull cranks at night, but was wondering what the plan of attack would be durring the day. See ya fri Paul.

Haven't heard anything as far as a day bite goes. Usually in Front of Fischer's is good this time of the year. 8-18 ft.

Hey newbie.

Welcome to the site.

If your fishing night time, i guess the speed is key keep it slow. anywhere from 4-10' with large rapalas or Husky Jerks.

plenty of info in the last couple days worth of posts to get you started.

Welcome!!!!

Check other Posts. Husky Jerks size 12 & 14. Colors: Clown, Firetiger, Tenn. Shad, Blue Chrome, Black/Gold, Black/Silver, Perch, Orange,

Shad Raps- Shallow runners size 5 & 7 same colors as above if they make them, add Chart/silver, and crawdad.

Depths 4-9 ft. would be a good starting place

I was at Appeldoorns 10/20 & 10/21.

Paul-

Thanks for the hospitality. You have a great place!

We didn't do well (Paul did - see earlier post) but we were fishing next to 2 boats that boated nice muskies. That was fun to watch. Probably be back in a couple weeks for skis and eyes.

Welcome to the newbie.

Thanks for the responses guy, much appreciated!!

We will be going out on the south side. We normally fish Big Point....any news out of that area.

Haven't heard of anything, but I would guess any area like that with good structure and colder water temps will hold Eyes.

Just keep covering alot of water and try different depths until you can put a pattern together.

Good luck and post your results.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
