Anyone have any reports or water temps?

Are there many people fishing it yet with all the rain/cold we've had lately?

Hit Riley with no success last sunday and temp was 57. Crappies seemed to be scatter all over the place suspended but just caught a couple.

Thanks!

Fished Tonka for walleyes this afternoon. Water temp was 56. Marked lots of fish and had some solid bites, but wasn't able to hook anything. Wind started blowing from the straight north at about 30 mph and the temps dropped 10 degrees in about 3 hours as well. Perfect time to finish up and go watch the Vikings lose, lol.

There was quite a few... not as bad as a warm summer day, but still several. Most were either the big ocean cruisers or the smaller 14'-18' fishing boats.

I don't mean to change the subject, but I thought that spearing wasn't allowed on Tonka. At least I thought I read that in the regulation manual. Correct me if I'm wrong...

was out saturday fishing eyes at about 10 , got several mostly small except a couple. Then about noon I was attacked by an armada of sailboats, worst part about it was it forced the other boats to come within about 10 yards away from me so got sick of almost getting swamped and called it a day. Boat launch on saturday at noon was only about 10 spots away from being full (grays)

Hi all,

What is the best ramp to use if I'm planning on working the Wayzata/Browns/Gray area? Looking for location to areas mentioned and the best place to return to a truck without it being broken into.

Thanks, Chris

Grays bay is a sweet ramp - well it has 3 of them. The docks might be out though - not sure. confused.gif

I see your from MG. Take 494 S to 394 W. Take the 101 S exit. Can't miss it grin.gif

Cool, thanks guys. Typically I use Carson's or am on the west end of the lake. Should be a nice evening!

Thanks for posting the temp, I'm sure it will drop 4 degrees or so by sunday.

Has anyone else been out? I don't think I will make it out until next week(Monday or wed)

Thanks

Yeah, me and my son were out on Tonka last night, Wed., Oct. 24 ... fished a spot that's been productive in the past in the fall. from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm ... beautiful moon, flat calm, 56 degrees water temp, likewise air, jigged fatheads in about 10 FOW ... and my son got a 17" and a 20" eye and assorted small stuff, and I got small stuff and no eyes. (not even a good pick-up) They're late this year on Tonka and Mille Lacs! -- DonMc

They're late because the water is too warm. Hang on once it drops into the 40's.

Cjac and I were out last night as well, actually my first time on Tonka this year so I really wasn't expecting much at all.

We struggled. Shoot... didn't catch a fish. We wanted to pull cranks so that is what we stuck with and boy was it difficult. Kept picking up a lot of floating weeds on the lines and fouling the cranks.

Appeared that most folks fishing at sundown were anchored on the outside weedlines.

Water temp was 55-56 which was flat out shocking! I would agree that is a good indicator that temps need to drop.

Well at least you know Hanson and I are honest in our catch reports, or lack of in this case. We got shut out....

Was not expecting 55+ water temps still, and the weed column was still thick, Anything inside 14 feet and we were in thick weeds. Once that cools off and they lay down a bit the Wayzata Bay area could be good. Sounds like Mr Stanley did well, always a tough call on which part of the lake to hit. Looking at the weather forcast it could be a few days still before they drop off, but looks like a gradual and not a "freezer" change.

Looks like Cjac and Hanson were on the east end. I was west grin.gif I had trouble with weeds if I got into 6ft depths but no floating junk issues. I'll attribute that to fewer cruisers to churn up the weeds out my way. Also my structure was mid lake and not attached to the south shore so everything floating probably got blown away from it Tuesday.

Going to tonka on friday morning for muskies. Wondering how the bite is out there right now. Also, not looking for any hot spots, but any help would be great. Email if you wish. Thanks

well as you all know, my brother and i went out to tonka this morning. Man was it a cold one out there bright and early. We spent 5 hours on the lake. Had one follow up and under the boat, one blow up way out in front, and caught a small pike. Was working the west side the whole time we were out there. It was a good morning on the water.

Got out both Saturday and Sunday. Temps ranged from 47-51 and clarity was good everywhere; east side. Great cloud cover. Weeds are brown, but aren't laying down that much.

Moved one that looked to be 42-45". Was hanging on a shallow flat. Neutral follow the first time. Two casts later she played fetch again. Went a full turn on the 8. Gills flared, here she comes....only to kiss my Phantom's a$$.

We give her nearly a 3hr break and come back to her. Here she comes again and she's feeling a bit ornery. Two full turns on the 8. Gills flare again only for my Phantom to get another smooch. You tease!

Tried to move her Sunday, but no dice.

Did catch a 21" bass real shallow on a rad dog Saturday. Sand/milfoil transition area.

More great cloud cover Sunday with a front moving in. Very surprised we didn't at least see a couple of Skis.

Graph showed the fish tightly schooled up. Not sure if bass or eyes, but the graph was either bare or showing a pile.

Buoys are out, Gray's Bay docks were in the water as of Sunday evening around 6pm.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
