Can't tell you much about Birchdale area specifically as I like the lower river and lake and never fish above the clementson area during the fall. I was out Tuesday, water temp about 49 degrees, a little color to the water, current running pretty strong and I bumped it up to a half ounce jig where I was using a 3/8's the week before.

Been raining all day and it's supposed to rain all nite and most of tomorrow followed up by high winds. This certainly will not help with conditions on the lake or river for the short term anyhow.

Rising water and faster flow I will fish shallower spots than I normally do during the fall season.

You may have to work for em but there have been some nice fish caught over the past week out of the river.

Regards.....fiskyknut

I crossed over to the dark side of smallies about 15 years ago. Mostly chase pannies in winter but used to chase eyes a few times on the hard water each season.   I could post a ton of pics if you need more proof.

Sorry to make you hold up a bottom feeder, but we needed to see it!

I was up over the weekend and my shoreline was getting pretty sketchy.  Had a pocket of open water down the shore about a 100 yards. Where I could see the bottom in two to three feet of water.  Walked out about a hundred yards and popped four holes Saturday afternoon. There was 17- 18.5"s of ice in those four holes. Looking at the forecast I can't see the ice sticking around too much longer.  The holes I popped had 5-6" of pretty mushy cloudy stuff on top and about 12"s of pretty solid stuff underneath it.
