How many big walleyes are there?!?

I was out this afternoon and caught a 21'' walleye a little down from the Sartell dam. I've been fishing this area for about fifteen years, and I bet I've caught less than twenty fish over 20''. And I've only got one piggie, a 29'', but that was in the spring, when I've caught most of my "big" ones.

I must admit that I don't spend a lot of time working to catch walleyes; I usually accidentally run into them while fishing for bass. But I have targeted them numerous times, and I bet 98% of the fish are about 14'', maybe 15''.

Are any of you out there catching big walleyes? (I don't have any interest in finding out where you catch them if you do.) I am just curious because today's "monster" made me wonder if I'm just that bad of a walleye fisherman.

Between St. Cloud and Anoka, a 30 plus incher is not out of the question! I have seen some mounted that have caught in this area.

I would say all in all 15-18" on average! Fish them hard for a week or two then you will start seeing larger ones come around!

Shackback,

You are right--there are some big ones around. I saw a guy catch one carp fishing in the spring from the bridge over the Watab River in Sartell. One of the funniest things I've seen is watching that giant fish head-shake in the river while that guy waddled his way down the rocks and through the trees so he could actually land it. Amazingly, he got it in. Turned out it was almost 31''.

I've seen them to 28.5 come out of the St. Cloud area.

The last full moon I know someone who caught 6 of them over 24" during the late night on cranks. I don't fish walleyes on the river much myself as I usually stick to the bass.

Nice stringers! I must say I'm jealous. grin.gif I guess I know the fish are in there because I have caught a few; it's just that I don't catch as many as I would expect. Maybe I just suck at catching river walleye.

Do most of the big fish come from near dams?

I wouldn’t say dams only, but man made structures and naturally made ones too.

LOL shackbash! so the fish come from structure both man-made and naturally occurring! Way to be specific!!! grin.gifgrin.gif

I'm just joshing. I'm the last person who should be giving anyone crap about finding big river walleyes.

I think above St Cloud there a little more common, my biggest down here has been 22" although when I was a kid I remember catching a 6 pounder with my dad (no measurement) my biggest above St Cloud was 27"... I dont see why you care about that trash fish around here... I hope you fillet em all blush.gifgrin.gif

carmike,

I was thinking of a great spot, that is man made, but not a dam. I threw in a "natural spot" to throw off the "man made" shout out! grin.gif

In a round about way, I am telling someone in the area or who knows the area of a spot with out telling the spot!

People do not like when one tell a direct spot!

If ya get what I mean! grin.gif

Went out last friday above the Sartell dam and pulled out a 22incher grin.gif had a total of 6 walleye in two hours the rest were < 15". Nice having the river to myself and finally get rid of the recreation. The current was unreal for this time of year and water levels are extremly high. Difficult to fish but well worth it!

OK fellas, so I have to do some bragging. I went out last week and caught a 24'', 26'', and a 29'' that was fatter than any walleye I've ever seen. Definitely the heaviest walleye I've ever caught. I must say it was a blast! The pike are going bonkers too; just be careful, because it don't take much for that expensive shad rap/husky jerk/ripstick to get clipped off.

And I caught a 21'' that I actually cleaned (all the above were put back in) and it had a fairly large catfish in its stomach. Man are those fish eating. Go hit the 10th street dam or Sauk Rapids for some walleyes, if you can handle it!

And just a note: I've been talking to guys fishing up by Sartell (below the dam) who say they haven't been doing all that well. I have NO idea why they aren't catching fish, but apparently that's the bite. Anyone else know anything?

pulled a 28" out of a hole near little falls last night. same hole I landed a 31 1/2" a few years ago. the later fish was caught pre spawn and would guess at least 12 lbs. the big ones are there. where are they all summer? today no big ones, but a nice limit of 15"-18". had miles of river all to myself. unbelievable action this last 2 weeks. good luck.

Nice fish. You look so happy! smile.gif

Should have been a bass? Did you catch him on a senko? grin.gif I ask because I've caught almost as many on senkos this year as on more traditional baits.

DT6 in some fast current. I think there was a submerged tree or something. Made the same casts 4 times then she hit. Fought real well too. (Don't tell RR316) I thought it was a cat then I saw the white tip. Still wasn't a bass though crazy.gif

Fillet and release, that's my motto!

(Sometimes. I actually let 98% of my fish go; hopefully the kids can fillet and release more than I've been able to.)

That 19.5" Bass pulled harder than both those walleyes put together grin.gif.... actually that bass gave a fight on 17lb test and a MH 7' baitcasting setup, the walleyes on the other hand (27" and 22") gave up little to no fight the 27"er was caught on 10 lb test on a crankbait no less and took all of 15 seconds to land in very swift current (my 109 trolling motor was on high to hold) the 22"er took less than that on 6lb spinning gear... like I said there only redeeming quality is there taste

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
