Want to hear if anyones been out, good or bad. With the absence of any reports for this amount of time has me concerned... That and would much rather read reports then speculation on how things are so hosed up with the latest DNR population report. I'll be heading up for Friday, Sat. night and will post results. As for the status of the lake... I just go fishing, if I catch what I'm after I go back and if I don't I go to another lake and I've been going to Mille Lacs exclusively for a long time.

I'm all over the Appledorn reports but I was looking to hear from anyone during the week. I'm sure there will be a flood of new posts next week.

Probably won't hear much until after the weekend, and we're in the darker moon phase as well right now which usually doesn't get the crowds on the water.

Other than last night the lake would have been pretty tough to fish with the winds the last few days. After the weekend you will see some I am sure.

I had big plans to go back up this week, but the wind has been a factor of why I have not.

Boats ready and waiting for me to hook her up and sling back up on Sat. or Sun!

Did ok Friday night picking up 10 between the two of us East of Red Door. All fish came from 7-10 pulling off the drop and back up. We were far enough east of RD that we hit a spot where the weeds ended. All fish came within 300 yard of the weeds ending. Nothing in the weeds. Nothing smaller then 25 and nothing bigger then 26.5". Saturday we tried Casino before sunset and picked up one 26" in an hour. Went up to Seguchie and picked up three 18" in an hour and a half. St. Ablans was busy when we launched but by the time we go back at 10:30 to give it a shot it was down to one or two boats. Spoke with guys at the ramp that didn't do well there so we headed back North to Red Door. Pulled for another hour or two with just one insulting slap. Last half hour upsized to 14 HJ black and gold and sure enough hit a 27" right away. Had to head out early next morning so wasn't able to prove anything more with the larger profile plug but I'd like to think that I ended the night figuring something out. All other fish came on purple perch HJ12 and lazer craw HJ12. By the way if anyone finds my lazer craw lost to the best fish of the weekend on Seguchie my Dad would pay you well for it's safe return. He appologized the rest of the evening because I explained to him that this plug was the equivalent of the Green Hornet in Grummpy Old Men. If you heard someone scream out GUSTUVSON!!!!!! in the pitch of the night on the northwest side that was me. Saturday fishing was slow with everyone I spoke with but my mistake is not commiting to a spot. Had to do over would have stayed at Seguchie or Casino. Would like to hear how the other guys did out from Casino...... not along the shore. I know it will be painful to hear if they were on and I left but thats a lesson I need to learn. Speed was 1.5 to 2.

CCow,

Glad to hear that you did good. I am headed up Thursday night with my buddy and my uncle to the Red Door. Hoping to troll that same stretch you were on to get into a few. I was up there with Perch for the fall frenzy a couple weeks ago and we did alright, same color and size baits you mentioned. I still have my HJ12 Lazer Craw. Can't wait to dip that back into the water, and have a few good HJ14's to try out as well. I wish I was up there right now.

yes many but did not have a digital camera so i used a disposable, kind of upset though because we caught them all at night, so some of them turned out horrible, probably one of the best bites i have had fishing at night up there in 2 days in a long long time, we caught i think 4 hogs on friday night, and 6 toads on saturday night.... right on the south side of indian point, just pure fun though, setting the hook on these things was just hillarious because they wouldnt move at all!

Horrible or not!! It would be nice to see some pics. You had to have had the best weekend of anyone over the last couple of years, if not ever, on the big pond. Congrats!!

Pictures would be great! I think Paul would know how to help you get them on here if you're not sure how to get them on the site...it can be confusing. I hope I am able to hook into one of those 28"+ fish Saturday night when I am up there! Can't wait! grin.gif

Was out Saturday night fishing point East of Izatys also tried Andersons for a couple hours didn't cath any. Skunked, last year did well in same spot around this same time. Only difference was we had no moon this year, and last year I was using an electric trolling moter, this year a kicker. Didn't see anyone else on Andersons past sundown. Lake was pretty empty on south end.

right before sunset and about an hour into dark i was using an 1/8 ounce pink and white northland tackle gumball jig, on a slip rig, and then after dark i was pulling the orange, and yellow firetiger perch minnow rap in 9 to 11 feet going very slow about 1 mph minnow rap was actually bouncing right off the bottom of the lake, pole would jerk like a fish had it but when it took it, it took it boy, it just doubled over and just pulse. so there ya go, other guy was throwing a normal perch color minnow rap and he caught a few too.

and as for the pictures only two turned out after dark because fishing partner has the fat finger syndrome an dlikes to cover the lense on the disposable, but i will try and get it on here, i have to find somone with a scanner so that is my next objective, and then try to figure out how to put the pictures on this thing. not very computer savvy, the only electronics i know are gps, and lowrances HEHE..

Hey 123fish,

I drove over to Izaty's yesterday but everything was closed up for the season so there was no body to talk to. If I hear anything I will let you know.

the talk around the neighborhood is that it is closed up for good and headed for bankruptcy. i was out fishing a few weeks back and they had a 15 minuet fireworks display, i was told that that was the last hurrah. all of the flags on the golf course have been removed since then also. the word was a larger hotel chain was looking at it but they did not want to assume all the debt, let them file and then come in after all is said and done..................tom fellegy

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!
    • PSU
How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
