      Fishing Report Clubs - LIMITED MEMBERSHIP - Join Today - FREE   01/24/2018

      Fishing Minnesota had added a new menu item (see above) called Fishing Report Clubs. It's a way to keep the really good fishing reports coming and being shared only with those who also provide detailed fishing reports. We will only approve new members who request to join if they have already posted a recent fishing report in the area forum, associated with the Fishing Report Club area  you want to join. We are going to limit the number of regular memberships, in the Fishing Report Clubs, to the top 20  members in each Club, to those with the best frequency and quality fishing reports provided in the club and less so in the regular fishing report forum open to all members. The higher quality fishing report reserved for the club of course. If  you want fishing reports  around your area, I would Join Now, some of the clubs are starting to fill fast. Use the Fishing Reports Club link in the Menu above (after you've posted a fishing report in the regular area forum) and request to Join.

Jump starting dead cranking battery off trolling motor battery

Question

A buddy told me he fried some electrical components in his motor (115 Evinrude) and was told by a mechanic he probably was to blame because he had previously jumped his drained cranking batery (on a few occasions) with jumper cables off his trolling motor battery. Didn't give it much thought until I had no choice but to do the same thing this past summer when my battery took a dump. My motor is fine but now I'm concerned about what to do if the same thing should ever happen again.

Can anybody offer any insight on this subject.

I can't tell you why but I can tell you that I bought a 2007 Mercury Opti in June and the dealer took my nearly new crankin/deep cycle battery out of the boat and put in a new crankin battery. I was in a hurry to get the new motor fired up so I didn't ask him why but he said not to use a crankin/deep cycle battery. He also used nylok nuts on the battery terminals and said not to use the wingnuts that he had used on the previous motor/battery. I'll ask him why when I have the motor winterized.

Auto and outboard charging systems are not intended to charge dead batteries. Your outboards battery should dedicated to only the outboard, nothing else. The larger the outboard the more critical that that battery be a fully charged cranking battery. Deep cycles don't have and aren't intended for those quick/large draws. When that can't be delivered because the battery is weak or its a deep cycle, electrical components get hot and blow. A good clean connection is also important. Thus the reason for lock nuts and not wing nuts. Afterall your cars battery cables don't use wingnuts.

If your have a weak battery in your car or boat get rid of it.

Jumping batteries. We know that a weak, dead batteries and bad connections are hard on the system. Jumper cables aren't good connections. It be better to directly connect the good battery to the outboard then jump it.

So, if your outboards battery is bad or weak replace it.

Don't run accessories on a cranking battery. Those low and long draws will reduce the battery life.

Another point to keep in mind.

When a battery is low on power it is unable to maintain the voltage level required by the starter drive. The starter drive will demand the same "power" or wattage no matter what the battery can deliver. If the battery's output voltage is low due to lack of charge, the starter motor will still demand the same power draw and that requires more current (P=VA). The increase in current (amps) is what will heat up the wires and motor windings and this can be damaging.

      The tip-up was in slightly shallower water but the difference was probably about two feet.  Sounds like Devil's Lake is the good bet but that's quite a jaunt.  I have heard that water clarity is a big issue out west and that would really stink if you get somewhere and can't see.  Might soak some suckers on Mille Lacs since it looks like the pike angling season is extended again this year.  Good luck this weekend!

      Decoys sure have come along ways from the foam things my grandpa used. I bought some Avian X decoys and retired grandpa’s foam things. I have noticed I am getting more birds into range with the better decoys.

      I found a great bait selection at the Baxter Fleet Farm today.  3 sizes of suckers, multiple sizes of golden shiners, and of course fat heads and crappies. The first bait shop I tried only had fat heads and crappies.

      Been very slow around here any luck anyone? don't want the lake but just general feeling around here. Did some pan fishing in 8-10 fow but got very slow.

      There was a couple mixed in the bucket. They were big shiners 5 to 6 inch range. The shiners would be down for 6 hours or so each time and we never waited that long for a sucker to be taken. Just our experience. If a guy could have both I say try and see.

      Call ahead for shiners.  I’ve heard there aren’t any left in the state.  At Mille Lacs 2 weeks ago I asked for some and the guy looked at me like I was stupid. Of course I blame that on the question...

      Fowldreams, did you have shiners? Just curious if preferred them over shiners, or thats just what you had.

      suckers, suckers, suckers. This was the only bait that worked for us last weekend and when the fish hit the rattle reels line spooled fast.
