We got one from a goose early season in the south west metro, still waiting on info from the Feds. Jonah

One goose in early season, no band.

My group shot 4 mallards, 12 teal (green and blue), 4 spooners, and 1 wigeon. Nothing had any bands...another group of my buddies (5 of them) shot 29 birds opening day (mostly mallard and teal), no bands.

None yet this year. My buddy shot a Canvas last year that had a band on so old that it had to be sent in to get acid etched in order to read the #. The bird ended up being 18 years old!!, that was really cool to see.

two years ago i shot a blue goose in Sask. that was double banded, 1 with the info and the other with a $100 reward on

it. First banded bird I have shot. Didn't know that they

did that, but kinda neat that they do.

Our group got one band this year. Haven't got the info on it yet.

Feds put reward bands on some birds to compare "recovery" rate of bands with rewards compared to regular bands.

Believe or not many, many bands go unreported.

i think that the report rate is much higher now that the newer bands have a phone number right on the band instead of "write avis bird banding...washington dc" on them. and the internet database helps out too.

We shot 5 geese with jewlery this but the year is young. all were shot in mn and out of the 120 ducks we got in ND last weekend none had bands.

last year we got two snow geese with double bands on each with $50 doller reward on them. kinda paid for the ND spring season licences right there.

I've never even looked there before. I shot a limit of ducks each day this season and no bands. 40 geese early season no bands. 20 geese so far this season no bands. My week of vacation is now over, back to the daily grind. I'm sick of eating ducks and geese anyway. What does everybody do with there birds. Fry, Bake, Smoke, Grill, Donate? I have ran out of ways to eat these things. (Sky Carp)

I have an interesting band story. A guy I work with shot a goose with a band at Ocheda near Worthington in 1990. It was born that year. His 18 year old son shot one this fall at the same place that had a band. My buddy noticed the numbers on the band started the same as the one he shot in 1990. You guessed it! The one his kid shot was banded at the same time as my buddies and was at least one year old at the time of banding making it at least 18 years old for sure when his kid shot it this year. The kid's goose and the kid may very well both may have been born in 1989. What's the odds of that happening? To make it even a little more interesting my buddies brother shot a goose in November of 1990 that was banded with the other two. Pretty crazy indeed.

Canada goose shot 9-08-07 West central Mn. Banded 06-27-03, Marissa, Illinois. Hatched in 2002 or earlier. Seems like we see more migrating birds than locals the past couple years of early season. Or maybe it was a local that was migrating in 2003??

I shot a drake mallard last year that was banded in sask. in 1996 and was hatched in 1995 or earlier. It was my first banded duck in 6 years of hunting and still my only one.

Kingfisher- be gratefull, been at this about 15 years and don't have a band yet.

Of course, shooting single spooners may not be the fastest way to go about it...

a lot of non local banded geese that are shot in minnesota during early season are molt migrators. especially those age 3 or less.

I have 5 bands this year but I think as a total 5 of us have 13 banders, of which there are 12 canadas and 1 ross and no ducks. I am not complaining.

Was hunting on the river friday 11/23 and had very good success with the cold weather. Myself and two buddies ganged up on this goose that turned out to be banded. We decided to share since it is impossible to know who made the deadly shot. th_Dougbandedgoose.jpgth_Curtbandedgoose.jpgth_Danbandedgoose.jpg

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
