Sit at the end of my dock and fire away!

They are around, but not as much in recent years.

Its usually pretty busy on my end of the lake for opener, in the reeds, and next to the muskrat/beaver home.

FLK, READ YOUR REGULATIONS BUD.

TAkING IN OPEN WATER

A person may not take migratory waterfowl, coots, or rails in open water unless

that person is:

a) within a natural growth of vegetation sufficient to partially conceal

the person or boat, or

B) pursuing or shooting wounded birds (while in compliance with the

watercraft restrictions listed below), or

c) on a river or stream that is not more than 100 yards in width.

I AM GUESSING THE END AF ONES DOCK DOES NOT QAULIFY AS NATURAL VEGATATION... crazy.gif

I'll throw a brush pile at the end of the dock. tongue.gif

But in all seriousness, there is public land, in the tall reeds 100 feet from me where guys sit, I'd assume if your out early enough, you would get a spot.

A few Mallards. And TONS of Geese. Lots of Turkeys too. I'd like to talk to the farmer that has the land on the corner of the street to go to french access and kelly access because of all the pheasants. I almost run them over daily.

I knew you were lying! I just played along...not really. I was just about 2 call you! Lucky, you think filling a goose shell with a can of "Great Stuff" would make it float? Thats what I'm tinkering with right now, any ideas?

Somehow, & after 7 cans, they float perfectly fine! Upright & all! My only concern now is that where I trimmed excess foam, that it'll suck up water...hope not frown.gif

Bunt, 1 more ?, I have a boat 2 use now & was wondering, if your on the access dock lookin strait ahead, then to the left all the way down if that is public, so in other words, if I'm not wrong, it would be the SW corner of kelly. Past the last house.

Were the beaver lodge is? Yes thats all public. I am the second to last house, and I know my neighbor very well, she would not mind if you were on her shoreline a bit.

Stop on in after your hunt. Im the 2nd to last dock. With the yapping white husky's in my back yard. Im sure I'll be awake as soon as the sun rises with all the gun shots. I'll have coffee on.

I may dip my boat in Friday night, but I dont want it to get peppered with BB's...actually, might be a good idea to keep my dogs in Friday night also. smile.gif

Sounds good! I remember that dog from ice-fishing, it also had a little begal following him/her around. As soon as we would start grilling they would both be out there, eating hotdogs, ect. with us. grin.gif The huskie was named Shadow, & the begal was Sparky. Good times tongue.gif

Bunt, 2day wasn't awesome like I was hoping. My makeshift goose floaters, kept getting flipped over in the wind. My fault for not puting a keel on them. There were 2 geese right when we got there, just floating around. Tons & tons of ducks flying B4 legal shooting. We had 6 or 7 ducks fly close enough 2 get 1 shot off, but missed. Later 3 geese came over the channel & had their landing gear down right away, but other people down-wind shot 1, then the remaining 2 split, 1 came back trying 2 land but the wind wouldn't allow that. It landed on the north side. Then the rain came, & it came hard, along with more wind! Dekes were flipping everywhere so we decided 2 end it early & save the other guys hunts. Sorry we didn't stop by, we were frozen & soaked! crazy.gif Now reading over the last post, I didnt evn leave my cell # blush.gif 330-0034

Hehe. I was thinking of you when I heard shots, and watched the rain come in. Saw a few other brave peoples out there. That wind must have been killer. I took off to the grocery store. I saw you pulling your boat in when I was coming home. The gray Tahoe. I woulda stopped but my kids were yelling, and my dogs were outside in the down pour. I have your number now. smile.gif

See you on the 6th.

Matt

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

👍. What was the water temp in Black Bay? Thanks....

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
