Grouse anyone ?

Recommended Posts

My brother-in-law, his girlfriend, and his uncle combined for 10 grouse on opening day. They were hunting in the Swatara/Hill City area. There must be quite a few birds around that area if they managed to shoot that many through the jungle!

I tried old grade Tuesday 1 flush, Bro tried West of Aitkin yesterday 1 flush in 2 hours. Should we head North towards Swatara/GR?

I flushed over 20 birds on sat. Only got 2 by ground swat. Birds were really bunched up in certain areas.

too many people out on the opener, all my spots were hunted. went out on tuesday after the rain, nothing. went out on wednesday, missed one bird, almost hit another with the truck windsheild on my way to a spot. now more rain.

I think the birds are still bunched together in family groups, once they disperse, it will get better.

I was up at the shack last weekend and it was so darn hot I couldn't do much grouse and woodcock hunting after about 11:00 am. My dogs run too darn hard and I didn't want to give them heat stroke. I had pretty decent luck finding birds, but the shooting was a different story. I bowhunted in the evenings, just sitting in the woods when it's in full color is a good time for me. I almost put some iceing on the cake by dropping a doe on Saturday night, but it wasn't to be. It got the old heart pumping a bit though. I love fall.

I talked to my brother-in-law a couple days ago, and they did very well last weekend near Hill City. He filled out on Sunday, and my father-in-law shot 3. They don't have a dog either!

I took 8 last week after work.

I have not yet really put heat to the woods ,but they are thinning. All of the ferns are brown and most of the under brush is down.

3/4 of the maples are down with only popolars and birch and oak holding leaves high.

The ticks are out in full force yet,so check your dogs for a few days after your hunt.

The numbers of birds are as good or better then last year.

No sense in letting &^%*(@@ get their way.

I did have a full response.Posted it & deleted it.

I am who you see.Nothing more ,nothing less.

My only agenda is to get others into fish and or game.

It's the only thing I live for these days.

If someone wants to toss stones I'm done for ,cause I'm not fighting back.I held my tongue all day.

That guy called all of my product sponsers & forums.

I had to explain myself to all of them.

Lost a few until this is all over.

To that end I'll be as I have been .A fisherman sharing secrets!

As far as I'm concerned judge me for who I am today ,not yesterday nor tommorow & or judge me lest you be judged.

I appreciate the info you provide. I have no idea what &^%*(@@ was referring to but the past is gone. All anyone can do is go forward learning as we go. I also live to hunt and fish these days. Walked for 2 hours in East of Outing today. Great habitat,no birds. Anyone else hunt this area recently? Returned home,Walked for 5 minutes on my property, two flushes. Time to climb the stand. Life is good!

Thanks for the vote of confidence Shackbash.

I'd relish the opportunity to fish with the mighty SB.

Fishing and hunting are 2 of the 4 most important thing to me.God and family are the other 2.

I so understand what some people think of me and some feel it's their lot in life to put an end to me.

That's ok.

All I can do is stand up & do the right thing.

I am sober today,I was yesterday and with God's grace I will be tommorow.

I am not what some percieve and through good solid posts I can change this negative tide.

It will require work on my behalf.

I understand what I need to do & I welcome the challange.

I have a program & it's working.

There will always be scuttle,Winkleman,Genz,Linders all have stuff floating around about them ,but yet they rose above it.I plan on doing the same.

Respect is not a given, ergo I'll earn that with the nay sayers.

Some may never change their minds ,others that have been with me know different.

I am a lightning rod.I am a leader, not a follower ergo some of the jealous ones will look for anything to drag me down. They will ultimately fail.

I do look forward to fishing with you some day .

This deal happened well over a year ago and I have changed regaurdless of my nay sayers say.

Who I was yesterday I am today.

What's changed!

Yet past actions still haunt me.

This will take time to heal ,but all I've got at this point in time is time.

I know we are beating a dead horse here, but how low some people will go to get there point across about something that does not have anything to with what this site is about!

Enough about that, let the leaves fall as they may, so we can see those grouse. Water under the bridge in my book!

Most come out stronger in the end away ways!

You got that right,if it does not kill you it'll make you stronger. This spread like wildfire across the forums.

I've addressed it everywhere.

Moving on.....

This will be my 1st weekend of really hitting the woods and doing some of the exciting wing shooting all of us grouse guy love.

I've gotten the pre season jitters out with those birds exploding.

Now that the flinch factor is gone those birds better look out.

Buck has been giving me the business about getting in the woods.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
