Thanks Dano, thats good to hear. DO you have any specifics for me, such as time of day or number of fish/follows? Of the two lakes, which will have the worst boat traffic this holiday weekend?

Was out on Alexander on Monday morning. Only fish for about two hours, but boated a 41"er and raised two other fish (one mid 30's and one mid 40's) in that time. Two days before that, I moved 8 fish in about 5 hours. No hookups, but the fish are starting to move really good.

As far as traffic for the holiday weekend.....ALEXANDER will probably be a zoo. But that is nothing new and you just have to learn to deal with it. I will be out there for certain.

i boated 2 in the 2nd week of august, one a 42 incher and a 47 incher, and had a 3rd one on. i had 5 or 6 follows also a couple were 50+. i might be up there labor day weekend.

Whats the milfoil situation???? I havent been up there since June and it was bad then. Are they still spraying????

I stopped going because I got sick of the milfoil. I hope its better!!!!

I would think they are done with spraying for the year. That usually ends in July since the growth period ends shortly thereafter. I would suspect the weeds are already starting to die off, but I have not been to the lake in a while.

Thanks for the reports! I might be heading out Saturday morning to look for a couple toothy critters. Hope to get out early before the lake gets too busy. From my experince on the lake, it depends on the day which lures are best. One day can be top water and the next bucktails or jerkbaits. Is this still the case?

The last two saturdays on Alex have been good for us, we caught three each time. Four came on big bucktails, one on a small bucktail and one on a topwater. A few follows and misses and one blow up on topwater just before dark that scared the heck out of my wife grin.gif.

Nothing real big though, they have ranged from 30-43 inches. We have been doing the best in the evenings. Probably be out there again this friday night.

Just got back from Alex. Only moved one fish, but it had the hooks of my Suick in its mouth. Nice fat 44"er. Lots of boats out pitching plugs tonight. Should be a busy weekend.

They were out on the lake on Monday morning sparying for Milfoil again. Thick stuff, but the fish hold in and around it. I use a Pearson Grinder and go right through the stuff. Lure is about as weedproof as can be!

That would have been me. Black Lund with my wife and daughter. Went out yesterday and picked up a small 35"er bout 100 yards further down the shoreline. Both came on orange/black jerkbaits. Water was pretty slimy with algae bloom yesterday!

Went to Alex last night, picked up a 45". Cool thing about it was it ate a homemade top water. I think it's the same one my wife missed last weekend. We were in the same area and it shot straght up about four feet out of the water like hers did. It is awesome seeing a fish of that size come completly out of the water like that!

We are going to try Shamineua tonight.

Nice work. I caught three in an hour, in that same stretch, a couple weeks ago and they all went ariel. One was a 48" right next to the boat. That was pretty fun night. Any luck on Sham?

I was on Shamineau on Saturday night as well. Had a couple follows, but nothing ate. The areas I wanted to fish were pounded by recreational boaters.

Yeah, it was pretty busy out there. Lots of people fishing walleye's too.

I caught the first one right at sunset, came out of nowhere and hit right at the boat. The other hit at about ten o'clock, it was pretty quiet out there by then.

I left right at prime time. I had my 6 year old out there and since school was getting close to start I wanted him to get back into the time schedule. I wish I could have stayed beyond dark, the fish I moved I think would have eaten.

Heading to alex tonight, t-storms permitting. The fish have been moving there lately and we hope to put a few more in the boat tonight. We have have did the best right before and after dark.

Was slow for us also. For the first time all year we didnt even see a fish. The cold front sure did not help. We fished from 5:30 till 9:00 and threw maily spinners and plastics. Just have to hope for better luck next time.

Its good to see that you finally remembered how to catch them again tongue.gif. I was up around Bemidji the last week of August, and we tore em up. Will try to get some pics up on the musky forum. Stick a pig for me, as I'm in a land with no muskies right now.

The water is clearer then it was a few weeks back. That algae really puts a nasty stink on the trailer also, had to spray her down each time I got home.

All, Where have you been bring them up from...deep weedlines, points, shallow bays ??? Have you been burning the lures or slow rolling ???

I'm still a new comer to musky fishing, but have put a lot of time on the water this late summer and have only had one hookup...40+ Unfortunately, she threw the hook as she went air-borne... Still was a great time!

Any advice would be great for this rookie...thanks

All things being equal, what time of day (morning, afternoon, evening) would you say is the best time to go after muskies on a given lake? Does this opinion change for either Alex or Sham specifically?

I used to have my best luck on Shamineau mid-day, but that has now changed to evening and after dark. It probably had more to do with how I was fishing them and location then any other factor for the change. It seems the fish are harder to find in the weeds in early AM, thus the better luck for me around mid-day to afternoon. At least for me they have been hard to find in the weekds early. Now I look elsewhere and have found good results.

MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

      Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
