Craziest Barge experience I ever had

22 posts in this topic

Sat night we were fishing down by the Airport and found a nice spot where we could nose up onto shore and throw out the back anchor. The front anchor was carefully wedged into some big rocks up on shore.

Later that night LFC radioed us that a barge was coming upstream....a big one.

I had no idea.

This thing was like 3 wide and 5 long. We called the barge on the radio to give him a heads up on our location. We thought we would be fine on shore.

This thing passed by us and I kid you not, the waves it was throwing up from the engine had to be 6-8ft high!

As he went be we were totally sucked upstream, uprooted both our anchors, snagged our lines, and tossed us about. This was a very big boat with 3 200+lb guys! We didn't have a chance.

And as a parting gift... when they were about 1/4 upstream they gave us a nice fireworks show from their deck.

Crazy stuff shocked.gif

When he says "sucked upstream", he means it. There was a lot of flow that night, at least 3-5 mph, yet we were pulled upstream a good 50 feet. Had to let slack out because the anchor was not holding us in place. I think being nosed up to shore made it worse than if we were in the water, actually. Never seen anything like it.

Hanson, WWG, remember the time the barge rubbed the swing bridge... Rumble! shake! shuddder! ripple! we were 10FT from it passing in front of us.....shocked.gifshocked.gif

My comm: To the Capt of the MARY J.... Do you guys always rubb the bridge...... Nope!!! We barely knicked her... LOL

Welcome to the river mates!!!!!

This was totally different.

I swear, he had that thing WOT. In fact he turned on the back spot light so we could admire the water he was throwing.

The barge was nowhere near us and still managed to toss us around like a toy boat.

LFC sure gives good advice. I never even have brought my marine band down to river before. Only used it up on Mille Lacs. LFC told me about communicating with barge captains at the KOTC G.T. and it hit me, bring marine band.

I have always noticed after a barge goes by or even when a barge goes by, a bite is sure to follow.

I can not wait until the next time I am down on river and tell a Tug boat captain to "Spank the onion" or "giver the onion" when they go by.

The Barge is one of those things that makes a trip down to river a little more exciting. You never know when you are going to get sucked in. cool.gif

I remember one time at the confluence at Miss and MN. We had one of those triple wide and god knows how long barges come by. We lucked out, cause my two other boat buddies and I held on for dear life to a snag on the west side. We still talk about that, when we roll by that snag.

I figured LFC could of told the capitan to gooser up by DTRO's/wwg's boat. I am sure he is getting to know all the capitans very well. grin.gif

LFC, what was your boats handle again?

We were in WWG's boat and his radio only transmitted, so we called out to barge and he replied on his loudspeaker grin.gif

Oops, I have never actually been in your boat besides the time it was beached at KOTC gathering. Otherwise I would have gotten it right. [smiley :whistling: ] tongue.gif

Its all cool Mate!

I'm hoping one of these days we can hook up and fish together..... We text and talk enough while on the water it the next best thing. But not the same.

You better be in on the BPCL next year.... wink.gif

If not this year there is always next. We both know and fish with a lot of different people so finding time can be hard. Especially with the little time we have left this season.

As for the BPCL, it sounds like a lot of fun to me. I guess we'll see what happens next year.

Good reports guys.   We were up Wednesday to Sunday.   I second you on the weather, rain and wind got old.  Not to mention bugs were terrible.  No see ums bothered us the most.      For us luckily the fishing was great.   Limited on bows and Lakers.   Had several stellar meals too.

Hi, I'm looking for a fresh report from the North end.  Thanks!

Refresh my memory... If we just go into Trout Lake for the day, we are not required to get a permit in advance. We just fill out the form at the portage. Is that correct?
    • Avid Angler
      Yeah that is the one.

Thanks for the information!  Whenever I'm moving, I use a ram mount to secure my bow mount. I just got the Ulterra this spring.  I had a Terova on my last boat. I was going across the lake in 3 footers and the locking mechanism failed and the motor deployed. Ever since then, I secure it for a piece of mind.

One of my trolling motor batteries decided to take a crap on me so it didn't have enough power to go into the wind so  that made it tough...we tried a few drifts in areas that looked good for eyes, but didn't pan out....We went to a different spot and started catching nice sized gills on the rigs so we decided to just say screw walleyes and go for gills (I could tell the gf wasn't digging the 20mph wind in the face lol). So we went to a spot I've fished in the winter and ended up catching a 20,24"...We caught them not to long before we left right in the same area.... I've never fished it in the summer before so I wasn't expecting much...The look on my gfs face when she caught the 24 was priceless though so I was happy.

In no way am I trying to fire up a catch and release vs catch and grease fight.  Admins, please delete any comments like that. I am curious about everyone's thoughts and knowledge on mercury in fish.    It seems Walleye are always the riskiest fish to eat via DNR and MDH surveys but I know the fishing for eyes is such a tradition up here. A lot of walleye are eaten in Minnesota every year as well as Pike and Bass which also can be high in mercury because they are high on the food chain. Does anyone worry about it or is this something that is overhyped? I'm a bit careful where I fish because my wife is pregant and I don't want her eating too much mercury. I'm still kinda new to the state so I trust the knowledge of locals more so than DNR in a lot of situations.    For example, in TN (where I moved from) our DNR says do not eat ANY fish from the Mississippi river. I'd say it's pretty nasty by the time it gets that far south but there are river rats as far down as Louisiana eating catfish and bass all year long and you don't hear of them dying from mercury poisoning or having other effects of it. At least not thay I've heard or read.    I'm very curious to know your opinions on the matter. I don't catch many walleye anyway but I do love eating Pike and other fish. It's so satisfying to work hard for a fresh meal but do I have to continue to be super cautious of what lakes I eat a Pike from? Seems like the closer to the metro, the more dangerous it can be...or is it? Some of the huge lakes up North are full of mercury too.

Well it end up being 2 broken live well pumps being broken.  The pumps would pump water into the live wells but also be spraying water into the back compartment of the boat.  That's where my water was coming from.  I would like to thank those that replied suggestions back.
