Members Only Fluid Forum View   08/08/2017

Fluid forum view allows members only to get right to the meat of this community; the topics. You can toggle between your preferred forum view just below to the left on the main forum entrance. You will see three icons. Try them out and see what you prefer.   Fluid view allows you, if you are a signed up member, to see the newest topic posts in either all forums (select none or all) or in just your favorite forums (select the ones you want to see when you come to Fishing Minnesota). It keeps and in real time with respect to Topic posts and lets YOU SELECT YOUR FAVORITE FORUMS. It can make things fun and easy. This is especially true for less experienced visitors raised on social media. If you, as a members want more specific topics, you can even select a single forum to view. Let us take a look at fluid view in action. We will then break it down and explain how it works in more detail.   The video shows the topic list and the forum filter box. As you can see, it is easy to change the topic list by changing the selected forums. This view replaces the traditional list of categories and forums.   Of course, members only can change the view to better suit your way of browsing.   You will notice a “grid” option. We have moved the grid forum theme setting into the main forum settings. This makes it an option for members only to choose. This screenshot also shows the removal of the forum breadcrumb in fluid view mode. Fluid view remembers your last forum selection so you don’t lose your place when you go back to the listing. The benefit of this feature is easy to see. It removes a potential barrier of entry for members only. It puts the spotlight on topics themselves, and not the hierarchical forum structure. You as a member will enjoy viewing many forums at once and switching between them without leaving the page. We hope that fluid view, the new functionality is an asset that you enjoy .

Craziest Barge experience I ever had

Recommended Posts

Sat night we were fishing down by the Airport and found a nice spot where we could nose up onto shore and throw out the back anchor. The front anchor was carefully wedged into some big rocks up on shore.

Later that night LFC radioed us that a barge was coming upstream....a big one.

I had no idea.

This thing was like 3 wide and 5 long. We called the barge on the radio to give him a heads up on our location. We thought we would be fine on shore.

This thing passed by us and I kid you not, the waves it was throwing up from the engine had to be 6-8ft high!

As he went be we were totally sucked upstream, uprooted both our anchors, snagged our lines, and tossed us about. This was a very big boat with 3 200+lb guys! We didn't have a chance.

And as a parting gift... when they were about 1/4 upstream they gave us a nice fireworks show from their deck.

Crazy stuff shocked.gif

When he says "sucked upstream", he means it. There was a lot of flow that night, at least 3-5 mph, yet we were pulled upstream a good 50 feet. Had to let slack out because the anchor was not holding us in place. I think being nosed up to shore made it worse than if we were in the water, actually. Never seen anything like it.

This was totally different.

I swear, he had that thing WOT. In fact he turned on the back spot light so we could admire the water he was throwing.

The barge was nowhere near us and still managed to toss us around like a toy boat.

LFC sure gives good advice. I never even have brought my marine band down to river before. Only used it up on Mille Lacs. LFC told me about communicating with barge captains at the KOTC G.T. and it hit me, bring marine band.

I have always noticed after a barge goes by or even when a barge goes by, a bite is sure to follow.

I can not wait until the next time I am down on river and tell a Tug boat captain to "Spank the onion" or "giver the onion" when they go by.

The Barge is one of those things that makes a trip down to river a little more exciting. You never know when you are going to get sucked in. cool.gif

I remember one time at the confluence at Miss and MN. We had one of those triple wide and god knows how long barges come by. We lucked out, cause my two other boat buddies and I held on for dear life to a snag on the west side. We still talk about that, when we roll by that snag.

I figured LFC could of told the capitan to gooser up by DTRO's/wwg's boat. I am sure he is getting to know all the capitans very well. grin.gif

LFC, what was your boats handle again?

We were in WWG's boat and his radio only transmitted, so we called out to barge and he replied on his loudspeaker grin.gif

Oops, I have never actually been in your boat besides the time it was beached at KOTC gathering. Otherwise I would have gotten it right. [smiley :whistling: ] tongue.gif

I'm hoping one of these days we can hook up and fish together..... We text and talk enough while on the water it the next best thing. But not the same.

You better be in on the BPCL next year.... wink.gif

If not this year there is always next. We both know and fish with a lot of different people so finding time can be hard. Especially with the little time we have left this season.

As for the BPCL, it sounds like a lot of fun to me. I guess we'll see what happens next year.

Pretty good for me from Monday through Wednesday. Found them from 14-24ft depending on the spot but most fish came from under 20ft. Trust the electronics and motor around til you find a good school. They are hitting pretty well when you find them

Best wishes for a happy retirement Ace.   I could never have done the guide thing even if I were a good enough fisherman.   It takes a special type of person to deal with all the different people... Congratulations on a job well done.

Terry, Sorry to hear that you have to retire after all of these years! I suppose It will be my turn to join you and Tommy before to many years also. See you on the water!! Cliff

Congratulations on job well done sir. Your deserve time for yerself with Sandra an the whole younger crew. You have always been nice to me an a big help when I first seriously did the Muskie fish guide deal back summer 1996. We have had some fun times laughing online an in each other's boat over the years. Even boated a fish or three an coined a few major phrases still used in today's ever so silly online Muskie fish market.  Good stuff that I think only you n I could muster up and never take any of it seriously. Truely makes me smile clear to my middle all the junk we talked about an did. You are a good man Terry and welcome in my boat any time. Anytime. Ya done good and will not soon be forgotten. Thanks for being my friend on or off the water. The name fits as you really have been "The Ace"on our sweet Vermilion.   Still no fish round my docks but Bonnie, Polar Bear Boy an myself always have enjoyed your company. Yer the best in many ways my friend.  Thanks. Keep on Rocken!   Tommy.       PS.    I will continue to keep the Zombie Horde in check.    ; )

I hope you enjoy your retirement!

Keep the reports coming Curt, much appreciated.  Unfortunately, I'm not able to get back up there until September 22-25th., so it going to be tough keeping my mind on work and not LOW.  Are you just moving around in the basin until you mark a school of fish, and then jigging them?  I see all of your waypoints on the screen you showed, so those must be spots that have held fish at one time.

Hey everybody, I have my last two guide trips on the 22nd and 23rd of August. A bad back and old age have taken their toll and I will retire from a job I have loved to do for the last 27 years.  I still enjoy it but unfortunately my body just can't take the pounding anymore. I'll still be out there fishing but no longer on a daily basis. I will miss all the regular clients I have had over the years and all the new people I have met that I can call my friends. Thanks to all of you that have shared the boat with me over the years, I hope you all had a good time. "Ace"   "It's just fishing man"

Bought a couple of baitcaster reels..my first....Lew's BB1 speed spool and Daiwa Tatula CT R. After about two weeks of daily practice casting in the river behind our house....lots of backlashes(birds nests)...I gotta say, I've come to love casting with these reels....much more accurate than my spinning reels. Any other baitcasting fans out there?  If so, what do you use?
