Recommended Posts

Well we are a month away from the 14th annual River Rat tournament held at Beanies Maui resort. The contest this year will be on Saturday Sept22 from 7am to 3pm,the cost is 20$ per person. This is not a high stakes tourney, rather its purpose is to raise money for a youth sevice bureau. There are cash prizes for largest walleye, heaviest stringer walleye/sauger combined and biggest ugliest fish.Last year there were only a few FMers at this event, hopefully this year some more of you folks can join us out there......

I'll be fishing it again this year looking to defend our largest stringer title. It was a fun time last year which was the first year I fished it.

Croixeyes,

How do you sign up for the tourney? I will check at Beanies when I launch there this weekend. I will show up with my 13 year-old daughter. I know she can out fish me any day.

croixeyes,

Look forward to seeing you on the 22nd. The new boat is working great so far. I think we'll be using Gus' boat for the tournament. He got a new one this year too. Hopefully MJ can fish even with his new addition. It should be fun!

Looks like I'll hve that weekend open this year, past years its been the family fishing outing on the whitefish chain but it looks like its not going to happen this year. I don't really know much about the river that far up, heck I've only been above the kinni less then a dozen times in 9 years, maybe I need to expand my fishing area, Sounds like it would be alot of fun, plus I'd meet some more river guys and maybe learn something along the way, still got time to decide confused.gif

Walli1...you can still ply the areas you fish down south, just time your run so you leave time to make it back. There is only 2 no wake zones between beanies and your area, the kinni being the longest.Your fishing times will have to be changed though, yer eyes will have to get use to sunlight smile.gif.It might be a good Idea to see some other parts of the river, they are all pretty similar though.Youll be fine with the river knowledge you have. This will be the 3rd year for a back to back tournament wknd for me,after Beanies me and a buddy are headin up to Pelican lake in Nisswa to fish the annual walleye alliance tournament, flat out fun...See ya on the river...

  • 2 weeks later...

I talked to the folks at Beanies when I launched there this past weekend, and they said there was no registration form?? They said all you had to do was show up that morning and sign up. That seems a little odd, or a whole lot hectic prior to heading out. Can anyone confirm that all you do is show up?? Thanks.

Also is there an issue with fishing alone? I have a couple of feelers out but I'm really looking forward to fishing this and don't want my fate to be determined by someone else's schedule.

You can fish alone but it sure betters your odds if you bring someone with you. I am sure you could get a couple people interested in going out on this here site. Just put out the call! It was alot of fun last year even though we got spanked but we still had a good time even with the tornadic activity. grin.gif Then again, if you have a bunch of secret spots down there ..........take meeeeee! grin.gif

I found someone to take up some room in the boat with me. He's not a very good fisherman so I'll probably only get outfished 3:1. As a matter of fact I do have some secret spots close to beanies, very secret. These spots are so secret the only ones that know about them are the sheepies and me. I can only hope that the sheepies tell the walleyes about the spots because they are about as close to perfect as they come with the exception of no walleyes.

Well, there is always the ugliest fish part of the contest and I don't think anyone has brought a sheepie in to weigh yet......... The main thing is have fun, enjoy the day and the people you are with and hopefully the fish gods will give you something to weigh in, if not, still better then having to be at work!

Biggest Ugliest Fish...

Hmmm... I know a few guys who could put the smack down on that category. I've got to believe an Eel of any size would be declared winner. grin.gif

Ugly is a pretty subjective term and if I were judging, that would be walleyes. Flathead cats are such pretty creatures. smile.gif

Ya, I would not think a catfish would be considered ugly shocked.gif!

I would say the musky ranks up their. grin.gif

American eel or the Gar would probably take the cake.

I put a 13 lb sheephead in the boat a couple weeks ago. That was a whole lot of ugly, and slimey. Was fun though, right up untill I saw what it was...

No tourney for me. I'll be out of town that weekend. I suck on the Croix, so I save money by not fishing.... wink.gif

Can somebody tell me where Beanies is located? This type of tournament sounds like fun and a good chance to meet some good fisherman, maybe pickup some pointers. I have been fishing the St Croix and Mississippi for a couple of months with very spotty luck because I don't know what I'm doing most of the time. Thanks to everybody on this forum fo all of the tips so far, you have helped a lot.

FunFish, this tourney does sound like a blast. I have some advice for you if you're going to fish the tourney, don't follow the Tracker Tundra. I've been out 5 times in the past 2 weeks and the only thing I've done is eliminate unproductive water. Looks like I'm going to be able to get out a couple more times before next weekend but at this point in time the confidence level is pretty low. If anybody has some GPS coordinates along with presentation methods I'm all ears. I'm not a proud man or apparently a good fisherman.

Funfish, Beanies is the marina/boat launch under the I-94 bridge that crosses the st croix by Hudson. It is on the minnesota side of the river on the south side of the bridge. Take the last exit before crossing the river (Minn hwy 95/96)and head south about half a block and then take a left down to the boat launch. Sorry I don't remember the street names.

Thanks for the directions! I have no experience above the Kinni so if anybody has some advice they they would like to throw out, I'm all ears. This summer I have been fishing Walleyes and anything else that will bite. Mostly casting Rapala's around wing dams below Prescott and along shore above Prescott on the MN side up to the Kinni. This should be a fun adventure to fish above the Kinni.

It's not that far down to the Kinni from Beanies. If that's where you are comfortable fishing make the run.

Funfish...Do a search of beanies maui resort on the internet.Their website has a mapquest map for your viewing. They have limited parking down there, but I think they have additional parking with shuttle service,Maybe Turk or someone can chime in if they know this for sure.I myself launch elsewhere and pull up to there docks to go in to register.Hope this helps....

Hmmm... We fished right next to a tan full console Tundra w/ a Merc 150 (I think) last Saturday at an undisclosed location on the Croix. Was that you? blush.gif

Hanson, wish it would have been but I had committed to a volleyball tourney so that is how my day was spent. I was out Friday for about 3 hours before I realized I had left the garage door open with nobody home. So you say there's now another full console Tundra on the river? I've been on the river for five years and the only other Tundra I've seen are the boys from Hudson in the black 21 footer. Not sure if he still has it because I know he was having some major transome issues with it last year and it sounded like he was about fed up with it. If the boss allows it I'll be out again Saturday morning and Sunday before the Queens game. If you see the Tundra with a 135hp and a 10hp Merc on the back stop by, chances are I won't be too busy un-hooking fish.

So what's the format at this tourney. My plan is to be at the dock by 6:30am the morning of the tourney. Is that early enough? Is it a shotgun start or do you draw numbers or something else? Is there any kind of rules meeting or is it very informal? Any other info that can be forwarded would be greatly appreciated.

This is a very informal tournament. It would be wise to get there a little earlier than 6:30,by then most boats are in the water doing last minute prep. Its a shotgun start and since my boat isnt to quick out of the hole I let the speed demons have their space. No rules meeting, all the rules are listed on the beanies website I think. Here is a quick rundown, cash prizes for heaviest walleye, heaviest stringer of walleye and sauger combined and heaviest big ugly fish. Now you dont have to have a combo of walleye and sauger on the heaviest stringer,it can be all walleye or all sauger or saugeye. Most years the heaviest fish is a flathead cat...Hope this helps answer your questions....Oh yea,and you can only win one category.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
