1 post in this topic

Mantorville, MN Sept. 8, 2007 9:00 AM

The "Kids Fishing Contest" will be held during Marigold days again this year. Marigold Days is fun for the whole family. At the contest there are giveaways and prizes for the kids, giveaways in the past have included tackle, rod/reel combos, line, minnow nets, etc. Prizes have been bikes, nicer rod/reel combos, tackle boxes with tackle, trophies, etc. ((From reading other posts I will not mention sponsers/donators on here.)) Prizes for biggest fish. It is seperated by age groups. Make sure you check it out with your little ones! Marigold Days is a fun weekend (2nd weekend in Sept. 8 & 9) Fishing contest starts 9:00 AM on the 8th, come early to get a good spot! The contest is held on "Goat Island" (not an island anymore) but fishing is done above the spillway/dam in Mantorville.

You will need to get into a good sucker or carp to win, last year 8 year and 4 year old bros had 23" and 25.75" suckers to win biggest fish! Older group was a 2o+" sucker. Like alot of places bring corn and crawlers for best action!!

I fished here this morning with the Dodge County 4H club "Clover Buds", and these kids had fun, mostly small gills and bullheads. Can you say tangled, wind knot mess? Ok now multiply by 10!

Be cool if there was such a thing. Being people are getting so much more interest in pout it wouldn't be a bad thing I'd say.

I think some people are obligated to keep what they catch. Me I'll keep fish but not very often at least in the winter. (Not on Mille lacs) Mille lacs you have the chance at catching a trophy sure maybe it would be cool to keep it but for a lot of us letting a trophy go is as good as keeping it at least IMHO.

Very disappointing for the resorts as well as anyone else with a financial interest in the lake.  Me?  I release 99% of what I catch anyways, so the rule doesn't affect me much at all....well, I suppose it means I'll have my favorite flats all to myself for at least one more year.  I just really, really wish they'd let us troll after dark in the fall.    Why walleye fishermen aren't more amenable to catch and release, especially on a lake like Mille Lacs that's been on fire for, what, three years now, is beyond me.  Who wouldn't want to go and catch dozens of fish a day even if you have to let them go?
