I am newbie to this and this is my first post Me and my freind plan on coming up this weekend and were wondering what the fishing is like now(northern, bass, musky, what are u usin, where, etc). I am newbie to this and this is my first post smile.gif .

I do not fish for the fish you are asking about, but have heard that they are biting well.

The walleye bite is very good this week.

FishinBros - sounds like the smallies continue to be on a tear. I'd pick up bags of senkos along with some packs of gamakatsu finesse wide gap hooks, size 2/0.

Rig them 'wacky' style, i.e. put the hook right thru the middle of the senko.

4" senko in pumpkinseed was our best color when we were up there earlier. Toss towards docks, downed trees, big boulders, etc. and hang on. Bullrushes are also good as crayfish should be hanging around which brings the smallies in there.

Find the good piece of structure along a shoreline and that's where they should be.

I disagree with hooking directly through the senko unless you want to flush money directly down the toilet.

Use an o-ring and put the hook between the o-ring and the senko. You can re-use it OVER and OVER and OVER.

When you are catching 40-60 fish a day and losing countless more, then this will save u a TON of cash.

Great idea & photos - what size o-ring do you use? Any tricks or tips on getting the o-ring in place?

Frankly I think the O ring is a horrible idea particularly since it saves the fisherman a ton of cash...what about the poor bait dealers???? These ideas HAVE TO STOP. Actually that looks like it works well. What size O ring are you using?

It has a tool pictured on the page also. I just spread the o-ring out with needlenose pliers and pull the senko through. Them o-rings are really firm and tight, I almost never have fish pull them out of the o-rings. Its nice to sometimes be able to catch 20 fish on the same senko!

fished the reefs in big bay the past three days and did really well in 16 to 24 foot depths. Today was really windy and the bite slowed this morning by 8:00 a.m. Yesterday was calm and the bite was off and on all day. Lindy rigs with whole crawlers are the best bet.

I am interested in trying out your rig. Where on the Range are you finding Senko's. I can't seem to find them in Hibbing at my regular spots that I buy tackle.

Instead of buying the o-rings and tool to put them on just go to your local hardware store and purchase the smallest zip ties (3-4") they sell and give those a try. Black or better yet red really work well and are easier to put on. Plus they are cheap.

We have Senko's at Vermilion Fuel and Food in Tower. If you let me know a particular style or color you want I can normally get them in a couple of days.

ive been pounding the fish on the west end very well....lots of slot fish and great keepers....one drawback....the craws are showing up in droves....doing my best to kill them...but they are up there for sure.....

My 9 year old kid seems to do just fine putting on the orings with needlenose pliers.

fished Niles, Dayton Point, Knotts Island area...and WhiteFish Island area over the weekend...caught walleyes in and out of the slot...but take a couple extra doz crawlers for the crayfish...what a pain...it is rediculous

I agree Gary...if they made it to my boat...they died...

What end of the lake are you fishing? Ive never had any signifigant action on buzzbaits for bass in Vermilion, but, the northerns will always hit one when the water warms up.

      On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

      Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
