Fly Fishing the Upper Rum?

3 posts in this topic

I've got an hour or two to kill on Sunday and was wanting to fly fish the Rum River somewhere between Milaca and Onamia. I know the Rum intersects 169 a few times in that area. Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent accessible spot to catch a few smallies? Thanks!

It's pretty shallow up there, but maybe if you wade around you can find deeper pools. I've only drove by there on 169 to. I wondered about fishing it though. Good luck

I've gained access at bridge crossings up and downstream from the rest area on 169 and had reasonable success - when there's enough water. It's difficult to pinpoint how much water is enough; you'll have to check that out. Also, in my limited experience, Rum smallies are more interested in surface flies than the fish in most of the rivers I fish. Utterly unscientific observation, I know.

I'll stand behind Steve's ice rods!   I was able to get a nice collection of them last week.  Some panfish rods that I hope to work out tomorrow, and some walleye/laker types that I used today.  Great feel, light, and well built.       I connected with a couple mid-20 inch lakers today and couldn't have enjoyed the fight any better on another rod.  Very happy!   Thanks Steve!
