Boat Landings-Be Aware

SJonesi

Recommended Posts

Twice in the past 2 weeks I've had "incidents" at boat landings. I put in at private landings due to all problems(low water, vandalism, theft) at the public ramps.Pulling the boat out late night is becoming an adventure.Last week it was the drunk that didn't like muskies or muskie fishermen. I had a client with me and he was pretty freaked out. This guy hammered us while his buddy didn't say a word."I'm gonna kill every muskie I catch", blah, blah, blah.I kept my cool and did nothing to instigate/stir the pot. This past Saturday, I was pulling the boat by myself at about 1am. I notice 2 younger guys leave the bar and walk down to the landing area.Having grown up in the big city, I've always thought it important to be aware of your surroundings.Sure enough ,here come "dumb and dumber". Couldn't have expected the verbal barrage I was about to recieve. I did nothing and took the abuse. About what you ask? My Ranger boat of course. These scumbags were ready to throw down over a boat?????? I finished packing up and drove away. I'll remember these 2 jokers. They looked like the # 10.One was taller, skinny and bald and the other was short and fat with "wanna be" gold chains. He also bragged about his Yar Craft with a 300.I'm sure someone on here will know these guys from their boat.I'm posting this to make others aware and because I'm MAD!!!!!!I've thought long and hard about these episodes and refuse to be a victim.Nothing really bad happened , but it could have.My kids deserve to have their Dad around. I will be prepared if there is a next time and will put my faith in our legal system.Self defense , right?? Be nice or be gone. Steve

May I ask at which resort this took place? I bring my kids all the time and since these kinds of people have a tendency to hang out in the same kind of places, I would rather do everything I can to reduce the odds of such things. I know the policies on this website and such, but in my opinion, this is a safety issue for the members.

I took a MMA champ fishing last Tuesday. Too bad they didn't come up to us that day. That may have been interesting...... grin.gif

These are the type of people that act all tough but when confronted probably tuck there tail and run. If it was me at that boat lunch and I had some punk kids do that to me I would have tried my tactic. Granted I am 6'6 250lbs, I would have grabbed the tire iron from the truck and would have turned around and asked which one wanted a shot at the title first. That is about the time they probably would think twice about what they got themselves into. I have done it before. I avoid the violence as much as I can and honestly have never had to do anything because the intimidation factor always gets them.

Now I feel even worse about not being there with you last Saturday evening. Sorry Dude! I should've been there!

I am a little smaller than that 5'9". But the trick I have found is make sure they know you don't care who wins. I like the phrase "You might take me in a bum rush but I am taking at least 2 of you with me. So sign the dotted line and we can finish this at the hospital when we wake up." Not many guys want to be the first guy in, and if they do, you better do everything you can to end it quick because he probably can handle himself. That is only if I feel like getting into it......otherwise I put my head down and keep doing what I am doing. Best advice would be to call the cops though. I don't condone violence or fighting, especially with weapons. But sometimes you have to defend yourself. Most of these guys won't do anything....but you never know.

"You ever been to gravel school, No? Well your about to experience it!" HAs worked a few times for me in the past. Learened this phrase from a 75 year old duck hunter. grin.gif

Unfortunately now a days you have to be very careful because its not just fists and clubs, its become knives and guns. I am heading out to Boston this weekend and that is a place you don't want to be acting tough if you don't have the backing. You get the wrong guy and you are in a world of hurt. Luckily we are going to a wedding where half of the company is how do I say this kindly.....ever seen the Sopranos? They are only one or two generations removed from Italy and everything that implies. I won't mess with them if I had a bat an the first ten licks. Good thing their on my side. There are some people you just back away from. I wouldn't mess with people in downtown MPLS either, depending on the corner. You just don't know which punk has a gun or knife on them. Crazy world we live in. Stay safe.

I think we can all stop acting so tough now, I think we all get it were are all big tough guys. All though I am sure everyone likes the thought that they would be the one to give these guys the beating that they might deserve I doubt it will ever happen. Its a new generation now, you don't know who's carrying a weapon these days. You all have been quoting some pretty funny stuff about how tough we can all be but the one saying that might trump them all is "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight" or in this case maybe "Don't bring a tire iron to a gun fight".

If someone is hastling you call the cops thats what they get paid for. Or if you see them leave a resort go in and talk to the owners and tell them that their boys out here are causing a problem. I bet most resort owners don't want these kinds of guys hanging around and will most likely stop serving them in the future.

I would just hate to see one of you guys have your bluff called by someone not thinking properly, remember the conceal and carry laws apply to the guys you are facing as well.

I use to get real upset and say thuings to some at the landing that I will never state again. It use to be the way to settle things was with words, then fists and now guns and knives.

I dont say anything anymore as I do fear the dude's that carry weapons and there are more of them out there than one thinks. Cool head and walk away is my new approach.

I will just try to get a license plate and call the police.

Nice to have that permit to carry just in case. I'd sooner by judged by 12 than buried by 6. Not looking for trouble either, but 9 years in law enforecment have taught me the bad guys don't play fair. bill

I must be lucky!

Besides some (contact me please) running into my trailer light, while I had trailer backed into water and I was heading towards it in my boat (this year), I have never had an issue at launch. I load at questionable places at all hours of the night and Mille Laces and again never had an issue.

Maybe it my looks or demeanor, but the only thing that roll's up on me is the police. All they ask is what I am going for and what did I catch.

I think dumb luck does play a little in life situations, but many things hinder on attitudes. I seem to get along with drunks and I figure this has kept me out of allot of stuff over the years. I own a bass boat (its no ranger) and again have had no problems.

Maybe it the look of my "Westside" brother in-law that scares them off. He looks a little Mexican grin.gif

bturck,

How does one go about getting a permit? I've been out of my home state for quite some time. I've been around guns all my life and in the military. It's like being over seas. You watch where you are and you look out for your friends. I always avoid the issues and any bravado I may have had disolved when my first son was born. Now I do my thing and so far have been pretty lucky from the sound of it. I think getting a permit to conceal and having a cool head sounds like a safe way to go. You never know where the bad guys might turn up. Thanks!

Big Cahuna: Contact our local police department. Depending on the size of the city you live in they will take the application or perhaps refer you to the Sheriffs Office. Once the background checks are completed you will need to go through an approved course of instruction (regardless of your background with firearms) this will also include time at the range. Even though I am former law enforcement I had to go through all of it as well. Bill

Wow interesting thread. I used to love a good fist fight but not nowadays. To many weapons in the hands of crazy people.

Heres my question to you guys. Say you do have a conceal permit. At what point of the confrontation do you pull your weapon. And better yet..... when do you use it? Scarey thought. Now im all for the conceal carry law and Im seriously considering it. But I have always wondered what would be the last straw the makes me pull it out. Any thoughts?

Bigsmitty,

Those are good questions and is one of the reasons that taking an approved class is required prior to submitting your application to your county sherrif. It's one of those things you hope you never have to do, but if you are certain that somebody is going to inflict "Great Bodily Harm" then you better pull it out, and if you pull it out you better make certain that you are capable of using it, and shoot center mass. And on top of all that you probably have less than 5 or 10 seconds to make those decisions. The class is great for many differnt scenerios you may encounter.

I agree 100%. I took the class and the proficency test (passed both) but did not apply for the permit. The class was given by two former officers, and what really opened my eyes was the fact that if you shoot (kill) someone you will be charged criminally and probably cleared, but you will most likely be taken to civil court and who knows what could happen there shocked.gif The problem is you risk everything (including your boat) you have earned and going to earn for the rest of your life when you brandish your weapon. I would not want to stand trial in front of a jury of Nancy Pelosis'! Believe me, I think it is our right to bear arms, but the class really makes you think. I highly recommend it.

My thoughts on the whole issue at the landing.......jealousy. These punks were wishing they had as nice of a fishing rig as your Ranger (and towing vehicle - I am guessing). These guys would rather spend their $72.00 paychecks in the bar every weekend rather than save up for a fishing boat. Their comment about having a Yar Craft reminds of seeing bumper stickers "My Other Car Is A....."

Gotta' love beer muscles at 1:00 a.m., it happens everywhere! You did the right thing, ignore it, they are nothing but jealous punks.

Tightlines,

Good info. Sounds like the class would be worth taking even if your not concealing. Sometimes I have a legaly cased firearm in the truck. I would love to hear expert advice how and when to use a weapon. ( God forbid I would ever have too)

I would not recommend "conceal and carry". If you want to get shot or go to jail, it would be good to conceal and carry. Though, it may seem like a good idea.....it can get you into trouble oftly quickly, even if you think you're doing the right thing. Be Careful with that route!!! But I'm not touching that one with a ten foot pole.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
