VNP boat struck by boat

A boat operated by Theodore Olson, 55, traveling southwest of Burnt Island in Sand Point Lake struck an anchored boat owned by Voyageurs National Park Monday causing injuries to Olson and his father, Rolland, 91, both of Norwood Park, Ill.

Two Voyageurs National Park employees were injured in the accident, according to a report from the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the VNP boat was anchored doing survey work when the Olson boat struck the VNP boat at the stern causing extensive damage to both boats. The Olson boat appears to have been using a GPS mapping unit and may have been distracted by it, failing to keep a proper lookout for other boats.

Conditions at the time were clear, with calm water conditions. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

The victims were transported from Sand Point Lake to Crane Lake by the Crane Lake First Responders, transferred to the Orr Ambulance and transported to the Cook Hospital where they were treated for their injuries which included lacerations, possible broken bones, and bruises.
