Rick & CK find a new lake on fire.

Recommended Posts

So there's this little lake that no one ever see someone fishing.

Rick & I decide to see what it is all about.

It's got some 20 foot for a max depth and a good stiff break line once you hit 10 fow.

It's only 200 acres or maybe a bit bigger.

It has a ton of lilly pads growing all around the lake.

Picture064.jpg

We are tossing buzz baits right through all of those pads when this guy tags my bait on the outside edge of the pads.

It was a hard smash on the waters surface.

Picture068.jpg

There were a few more that we caught, but nothing boated were any bigger. We did manage to hook up on 2 others that spit the hook when they made their mighty leap into the air and by the looks of them they were bigger than the one in the picture.

The buzz baits started to take their toll on our arms so we switched over to a jig and sassy shad in a 3" black and pearl with a 1/4 oz white jig head.

As we trolled the pike would hit those shad like gangsters.

After around 6 or 7 -3 lb'ers I managed to hit this 33 incher.

Picture071.jpg

It was a girthy brute that gave me a great fight while I was using my Grandt 6' medium action rod.

I'll say it could take a lot more fight albeit that pike made several runs.

No leader or nothing.

I was a bit lucky with the jig placement on the side of it's mouth.

Once I saw the line was not in his teeth i really laid on the heat.

Watch the video. It's too bad the motor was running for most of the fight as that pike had my drag just a singin!

The pike seemed to be holding in the 8-14 fow.

Se we battled them right into sunset & then tagged a bucket full of small sunnies & crappies. Nothing worth keeping ,but I can tell that I fished today.

These guys were doing the same thing we were doing.

Picture024-1.jpg

The ducklings had to be dodged of coarse on our way in.

Picture052.jpg

and the sunset showed off these clouds in the most prettiest was.

What a day.

You have my number, whatcha waiting on???Those bass to get bigger?

That's no bass it's a carpet carp.hahahahahahahahaha!

I met a guy from this site & we headed out for a little rearing this morning.

His name is Brian & he's got a good head on him for fishing.

I left my locator at home ,DOAH!

So when we hit the 1st lake it was near impossible to stay out of the weed as the breaks are so sharp.

We pulled out after an hour of struggling with little fish being caught.

I decided to try that lake Rick & I had some success on yesterday.

It's a bit more forgiving as to the sharp break & we did manage to catch some fish in the hour we had left.

Here's Brian with a few pike.

Picture074.jpg

The action was not like what we had yesterday ,but then again we fished later in the day right into dark.

I also managed to hook up on another carpet carp too.

Picture073.jpg

All in all it was nice to meet another fisherman & it looks like we will be doing this again.

The added bonus is that Brian hunts too so I'm looking forward to some duck/goose hunting with maybe a grouse hunt thrown in for good measure.

Thanks Brian for stopping by & it was a pleasure to fish with you.

Here's a video of a pike & Brian having it out.

I'll let you know the next time we are headed up your way. Lots of stuff going on here at home. I think we'll be up the weekend of the 4th. I could come over to your place on Saturday morning.

CK, Thanks for the little adventure. Next time I'll make sure to leave a little more time open for some slaying. It was a great time and I look forward to it again in the future.

Cool beans!

I'll look forward to that day then!

We went out for some eyes tonight.

I caught 2 stockers ,pretty slow with the weekend boat pressure & the barometer being so high.

Come fall the action should pick up ,but then hunting season starts.Too many fish & not enough time to catch them, errrg!

These fish have not seen to many presentations I'm thinkin so whatever you'll need is cool.

You only get 1 box though.hehehehehehe.

Heck 1 Scumfrog & you'd be set maybe a buzzer or a jitter bug or a spook would be alls you need.

I have tons of jigs and shad bodies.

Just found out last night we'll have familey up from Texas that weekend. So I can only fish until about noon on Saturday. Maybe we could meet at the lake and you can just run me back to the bout lunch at noon.

Why don't you just hang with them instead of spreading yourself so thin SF?

There's this problem,Mallard's gonna be up and his boat might be a tad big for the access. So that means I'll drop my skiff in there .Well there's not room for 3 big guys in that dink of a boat.

I think we could maybe get his in there ,but it's up to him not me if we should try it.I'd need a number so I can call you Fri. night to verify as we will hit it fri. night giving Mallard a visual on the access.

so do I have to confirm or can I deny????I'd laugh to see you pushin mud to get in there. The water is way down and it's not a very good access to start with.

I can only get in with a 12 foot skiff & that's a workout.

Aha! I got it.

I havent been there in a couple years.

That cabin in one of the first pics is on the NE side of the lake. There is a farmstead on the SE side of the lake.

I have fished that lake for years; the first picture gave it away!

It's about 10min from my cabin...

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
