I have not fished Pike Bay since the opener!

I have heard that they are still getting a few fish trolling Raps there.

Friday evening trolled all around pike bay with raps got nothing. Then went up by canfield portage bay with lindys one strike but he short struck my lindy because i only had 1 hook and a crawler. Then went to mouth of everrets bay, nothing again. Saturday a.m. Trolled from end of pike bay out to cherry island and back with deep diving crank, you guessed it , nothing again. Then tried some lindy rigs around the end of the narrows, nothing again. Saturday afternoon trolled around pike bay more with nothing again. Saturday evening fished along a rocky shoreline in about 10 feet of water got one sunnie and one perch. It was kinda interesting though since ive never seen a sunnie out of vermilion before. Then trolled from swedetown bay back to pike bay narrows , nothing. Sunday a.m trolled rapala around pike bay and used a slip bobber off of a couple points, nothing again. I dont know if the fish just arent biting or if im doing something wrong confused.gif. Next year i will just stay in when the bugs are hatching.

Vermillion wally,

I was using lindy rigs baited with leeches or 1/2 crawler all weekend and we limited out each day.

Two mornings we were close to Stuntz Bay. The rest of the time we fished midlake bars.

6' to 26' of water.

Call me next time you are up and I will see if I can give you directions to get you on some fish! wink.gif

Vermilion is home to a lot of really nice sunfish. Brother-in-law has a multiple mount of 5 or 6 ten/eleven-inchers he caught in Fox Bay reeds.

This may sound counter-intuitive, but some of your best walleye fishing can be had by getting right into the thickest ongoing hatch you can find, jig the smallest silver Mepps you can find tipped with a small chunk of crawler, and set the hook!

Cliff,

Do you use two hooks when you lindy rig with a crawler? I couldnt figure out how to tie another hook on there and i didnt want to use a pre tied one because i had tied on my own fleurocarbon leader? Also do you blow up your crawlers with a worm blower? I was doing that all weekend and the one strike i had took the whole crawler right up to the hook and dropped it. Maybe i didnt let him run long enough. It looked like a mayfly bed on the depth finder that i was fishing up in canfield portage when i had that one. I thought they might have been hitting the deep diving cranks but i gues not although i only had one with me which was a tail dancer bleeding tiger pattern. Which crankbait patterns work best. I know my best rapalas in pike bay are #9 orange floating and #9 silver and black. I thought about fishing close to stuntz bay but i stopped outside of swedetown instead and thats where i caught those fish. I will be back up this sunday thru thursday. Maybe i can email you. Thanks for the help grin.gif

Vermilionwally,

I only use 1 hook on my Lindy Rigs, usually size #4.

I very seldom use more then 1/2 of a crawler on my rigs and I never blow them up.

Rap colors that work vary from day to day.

like cliff a half a crawler is more than enough....last week i had a client with a harness on...his choice...and took the extra hook off and he caught fish....one sometimes never knows....the most consistent thing lately is the plain ole lindy rig...a blue hook has seemed to work well...as has the good ol red....fishing has been fine and am really looking towards the rest of the year....but sure do miss my boat....always did claim i can guide out of any ...boat...get mine back soon...........very nice fish this year!!!!!

Just got back Saturday from Vermillion and had a great time...caught a few walleyes and the group had some nice fish in the slot but the hatch killed the bite. We did get into alot of nice smallies though, and I even saw a boat Friday morning right off our dock at Glenwood Resort that had a fishing minnesota sticker on the side of a navy Lund.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!
    • PSU
How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
