we are going to white earth lake for the first time this summer. hows the fishing up there? and does anyone have any tips on how to catch fish up there?? thanks!!

that lake is like a mini mille lacs it has a ton of stucture like you said i would recommend trolling or drifting over some underwater islands or trolling with cranks in 15-25 FOW

Report for 6-21-07 --

Made it to Cedercrest Resort on White Earth and it was hot. The weather was very hot.

We talked to the resort owner and he said that fishing had slowed a bit on the lately.

We still gave it a try and moved around a bit. We did pick up two nice fish -- one was 14 inches and the other was 20 inches. We got those at about 7 p.m. and that was it. We caught them in 17 feet of water. The other boats out there did not do very well. I also have heard that it is a better morning lake than evening lake.

It is my first time on that lake but my buddy has fished it quite a bit. It is a nice quiet lake that I will go back to. I understand it can be really good in the fall.

Last summer about the middle of July, we were pulling spinners w/crawlers over some of the humps that would come up to 7ft surrounded by deeper water. Managed a few nice ones, towards evening we started pulling raps over these same humps and the fish were going crazy, as soon as that bait hit came across the top we usually connected, the trick seemed to be letting out alot of extra line so that the boat was a ways a way before they would bite.

I am a firm believer on these clear lakes that it is best to either cast away from the boat while moving slowly with jigs, or to let out alot of extra line while lindy rigging to keep the bait away from the boat. Also, running over the same spot time after time after catching a fish will spook them out of their stationary positions.

Just my .2 cents worth.

Very good points chuck -- i should have thought of that.

I was too busy watching my buddy fall in the water when he was getting on the dock. Fell in about 8 feet of water. I have to hand it to him -- he did not spill a beverage or drop my keys. That would have been great -- looking for my keys in the dark 50 miles from home.

Only 4 more days, and I'll be at WE lake for the entire week!

I have seen locals come off that lake in the middle of the day, middle of the summer with stingers full of walleyes. They are there... just need to get one of the locals to spill the beans.

chuckster is spot on ., ive fished that lake alot a few years back ., boy we really had good luck .,my wife out fished me all the time due to the fact her line was so far behind the boat., and she realed in some dandys to.WE lake is a great fishing lake , just get to know it,. and you will have a blast.,

We fished White Earth last Friday, thought you all may be interested to hear that we caught a sturgeon, it was about 24" and maybe weighed 4#, we returned it to the lake immediately.

Yep, I believe they have started, or are about to start, stocking them back in there. I've heard a couple reports of them being caught lately.

Scoot is correct. They have been stocking them for a couple years now. I have seen them laying on the bottom while out diving. They are a very interesting fish.

The White Earth Biology Department stocked sturgeon around the turn of the last decade. DNR Fisheries caught a 10.1" sturgeon in their test nets in 2002. The DNR started their stocking program in White Earth in 2004.

My cousin is the one who stocks most of the sturgeon in white earth and round lake they get the sturgeon some where in canada and bring them back down here to study them a little let them get bigger then release them into the lakes

The sturgeon eggs were harvested at the Rainy River First Nations Hatchery in Canada, and then hatched at the Genoa National Fish Hatchery. The DNR offices that stock in the Red River drainage also get their sturgeon eggs from the Genoa hatchery.

I don't know much about netting, but I undrerstand that WE is netted by the natives. If that is true, what happens if they get sturgen in the net?

Has anyone caught a net before?

I thought that the only netting they did on that lake was for whitefish, but I could be wrong. I have never seen or heard of any nets out there.

I heard that they net for walleyes, but many people "destroy" the nets so maybe they stopped?

Last winter my buddy found one the hard way. We spread out to check for different depth's and one of his legs fell through. It was late December and what he fell into was a hole that had been opened a few days before to retrieve a net. The net's top cord was froze in so we figured it was left for dead.

finally got up there fishing last week! what a beautiful lake! walleyes were tough to find, but found a few. and those big blue gills were a blast! my kids sure had a great time catching them! hopefully i will fish the lake again someday!

Did you find them by the sunken island by the resort? We didn't find too much there -- mostly along the shore.

Should be a fun fall lake.

MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

      On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

      Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
