I've got a buddy with a cabin in that area...

Not sure if you're talking about the lake in Backus or just the area... But there's a lot of small lakes around there... Hard to find a strong Walleye bite in many of them... But there's some good piking, and some decent pan fishing...

If you're into Bass, a lot of day can be spent chasing them on the small lakes in that area.

Our cabin is on pine mountain lake, but we are going to jump to a few lakes in the area. We are going to be mainly looking for bass, but might try for some walleye's also. I mainly fish the mississippi river near Winona, and I have never caught a musky before! So that would be an added bonus. ty for the report

There are many good lakes in that area. Birch, pleasant, webb, leech is a short trip of maybe 30 minutes. Mille lacs is on fire for both wallys and smallies. Check the lake finder on the DNR website for lake surveys in the area. We tried a lake east of hackensack after we check out the lake survey. We caught wallys at 12 noon , bright sunny sky.

Thanks for the ice report, Sculpin.  With the weather forecasted for the upcoming week, I'm sure I'll be up there next weekend, hopefully walking out from the northwest side.   van, yeah, I hear you.  I've been up to LOW a few times, and it is very fun to know there's the chance of catching a monster....but driving all that way for a bucket full of 12'' fish?  Not my cup of tea. I'll save the money and buy three dozen T-bones to make it through the winter. I'm sure people who know the lake better than I do have done better on the weekends I'm up there, but the reports at the resort we used were pretty similar.    I like the northwest side on ML because it's where we've been for almost 20 years, but it also has close access to sand, rocks, whatever weeds remain, mud flats, transitions, etc. The only thing we don't have up there is extensive gravel.

I'm curious to see how this works out. Do you plan to keep the battery warm while not is use on the water?
