On Thursday September 29th Chris Jurek, DNR aquatic invasive species specialist reported to the GLSA that Starry Stonewort was found on West Lake Sylvia at the public access. The access has been posted to notify boaters of this new infestation.
Starry stonewort are grass-like algae that are not native to North America. The plant was first confirmed in Minnesota in Lake Koronis, near Paynesville in Stearns County, in late August of 2015. Since that time, the DNR has reported infestations at Lake Winnibigoshish, Moose Lake , Rice Lake , Upper Red Lake and Cass Lake.
The GLSA Board is meeting with the DNR on Monday to discuss treatment options.
As new information is available we will post it on our website.
