Early Feb.Fishing Report
Walleye #1 posted a topic in Bemidji Area, Cass, Leech and Winnibigoshish Lake Fishing Reports - Hunting
Well we have hit the typical February ups and downs. This past week the fishing was of mixed results, mainly for walleyes. With the last warm spell, alot of the snow on the lake melted, which actually has helped the lake in terms of making more ice. Walker Bay has increased its ice thickness which is great news for the Eel Pout Festival. The melt at the same time created some rough riding conditions when driving out, so be sure to take it slow. In terms of the fishing report, Walker Bay remains as the most consistent bite on the Lake. The Main Lake has slowed quite a bit and the fish have seemed to scatter. With that being said, the mobile fisherman who is willing to find new areas that have not been touched or pressured should be rewarded. Still look towards main lake rock reefs, humps, or shoreline breaks in 18-25ft of water. In Walker Bay, the fishing has been up and down throughout the week, but many anglers are still finding success with keeper sized fish during those low light hours as well as just after dark. Shoreline breaks actually were the best this past week in 18-26ft of water. What this allows anglers to do is often times intercept fish as they are moving shallow to feed, or many times a shoreline break can serve as a highway for fish to move along during the day. Downsizing your bait size has been a key this past week and not using larger shiners or rainbows. Fatheads or smaller profile minnows has helped put more fish on the ice. A Glow Jig with a whole minnow or small jigging spoon has worked well. As Feb. roles along, the perch bite will continue to improve as the fish work more towards the shallows in larger schools. This time of year site fishing can really payoff for jumbos. It is a blast to watch those big jumbos come in and inhale your presentation. The panfish bite still remains strong on smaller local lakes. Fish are being found in the basins in 20-35ft of water or along weed flats in 12-15ft of water. If the walleye bite is slow, get out the auger, look up some lakes on the Lake Finder DNR website, and start your hunt for some great panfish action. We still have some rental spots available in Feb. and with March knocking on the door give us a call if you are interested in pulling up some perch!
