Wanted to get a place up in the Brainerd area with some wood acres but their just selling faster then we could react.  We're north a mile or two from the Sartell city hall off Pinecone on 9th st.

House is backed up to a big park so I have some woods to look at out back and may even see some wildlife.  Hour closer to getting up to our camper when ever we want to go and no rush hour to hassle with getting out of the cities.  I really don't care what any of those guys say about the area, for someone who grow up in the cities and has to look around at ever corner for car jackers or getting robbed in the Cub parking lot.  I can't thank God enough for making this happen!  👍

Looking to try to be "cheap" for this one as because of the 'Rona' the budget is tight. Any input for creating this ultra cheap, but memory making vacation would be greatly appreciated. As advertised Inguadona is a great panfish lake.  We caught some nice bluegill and quantity was good too.  Didn't get into crappie a great deal but kids had fun with the bluegills.  The northern numbers were also good but not much for size.  We fished Women Lake a couple days and were able to get into some walleye, good eater size.  My son caught a 6# largemouth on woman, by far the best fish of the week.  We hope to be back and fish/explore some of the other lakes in the area.  Thanks to all who provided insight.

Fishing Minnesota has added a new menu item (see above) called Fishing Report Clubs. It's a way to keep the really good fishing reports coming and being shared only with those who are also providing fishing reports.
We will only approve new members who request to join if they have already posted a recent fishing report in the area forum, associated with the Fishing Report Club area you want to join.
We are going to limit the number of regular memberships, in the Fishing Report Clubs, to the top 20  members in each Club, to those with the best frequency to quality fishing reports provided in the club and regular forum. The higher quality fishing report reserved for the club of course.
If you want fishing reports around your area, I wouldn't wait, some of the clubs are starting to fill fast. Use the Fishing Reports Club link in the Menu above (after you've posted a fishing report in the regular area forum) and request to Join.

13 Fishing Omen Ice casting 32" rod in Medium power

I perused the 13 Fishing website looking at their products a month plus ago and saw that they listed some new ice rods for this year 2021-22.  On it listed several spinning models featuring full reel seat and split grip reel seat models.  So while just down at the local sports store, I happen by chance to spot an unusual looking rod and it turns out to be a bait casting model.

Listed key feature on the product tag:
      J36T Blank
      Evolve Ported Reel Seat
Portuguese 3A Full Grip Cork Handle
Evolve Stainless Steel Guides with Titanium Inserts

I did what I normally do when looking through the product.  I line them up side by side and check for consistencies or inconsistencies among the exact same model.  There are nuances and finding one that is of higher quality workmanship is sometimes the advantage of having a real physical product to examine.  I choose that one rod that was just a tad bit longer than all the rest.  The one that sticks out, in the literal sense.  I eyeballed it to be roughly 1/4 inch longer and after bringing it home and measuring it's full length to 32 3/8th inches long.  I did some quick measurements of the handle assembly and the length came to about 8 1/2 inches with the rear cork grip at 3 1/2 inches.

I mounted onto it a Shimano Curado 70HG reel.  The locking handle nut held it down securely with just a little gap between the reel seat and nut assembly.  I threaded the line through the 4 line guides and then tip guide.  Even thought the produce feature says Titanium inserts, they look a lot like ceramics.  I gave it my typical fishermans'  rod flex check.  It feels to fall within the range of Medium power fast action.  I gave it the loaded torsion twist check and did find quite a bit of roll over of line guides, especially the two ones from the tip guide.  There is just barely line rub on the blank when all given a full load flex test.

The rubberized reel seat feels good to the touch and there is a little bit of porting to give it some bling look.  The cork is quite pitted and filled with filler.  The handle shed quite a bit of dust after removing the plastic covering, probably from the finishing sanding.  Still overall the rod is assembled with top notch quality.  Definitely looking forward to using this rod this ice season.

      Shimano Curado BFS

I had ordered two of the reels upon the day after announced release.  However due to availability I awaited delivery delays for months.  It wasn't until almost the last day of August that I finally received the reels.  By then it seemed like the whole open water season was basically over, and I was thinking ice fishing already.  So I guess it will be all for ice fishing as was my main intention for these reels.  The best thing about these reels is the shallow spool design and it fulfills the real purpose for ice fishing.

After unboxing the reels and going through the free performance checks of just turning the handle and checking spool spin, I found that both reels do not feel as refined nor as smooth as it's Curado 70 reel that was just discontinued.  The retail is comparing the BFS of $190 retail to the 70's retail of $200.  The BFS has a gear ratio of 8.2 which is the equivalent of the 70XG model.  The ones I have are the 70HG with the 7.2 gear ratio.

The BFS is listed as a 6.2 ounce weight and does have a lightness feel to it.  I really have to compare it's weight to the old Chronarch 50Mg that weighs in at 6.0 ounces.  While the 70's were weighing in at 6.7 ounces on my scale.  The current 70 Mgl weight is listed as 6.9 ounces.

The next best unique feature is a clicking drag that is familiar to spinning reels.  I've always wanted a to hear clicking drag sound on a low profile casting reel.  This would be the reel just to do that for me.

I finally decided on the type of lines to spool up the reels with.  So the reels are to be spooled up with 14#  YGK G-Soul Upgrade and 10# YGK G-Soul SS112 Sinking Braid.  Being such a shallow spool I did not do my usual monoline backing.  I tied directly onto the spool with the braids.  Now the thing with braids is, that they tend to loosen the grip onto the spool when spooled directly.  However I am trying a new technique that sort of involves a similar method of Chinese finger trap line wrapping onto the spool like that from the FG knot or Albright knot method.  I always start with my loop end knot to loop the line onto the spool.  Then I did some opposing half hitch knots on each side of the spool and gotten about 4 knot wraps per side when I felt the full grip effect.  I am pretty sure this won't move if the Chinese finger trap method works.  I will note that just trying to remember to flip my half hitch knots was a challenge in itself.

Now it's just waiting to get some nice ice and then getting to deploy the Eskimo Outbreak 250XD.

      Spinning Rods

      ZDS270ML

I bought the 7' ML Fast action spinning rod at the same time I bought the baitcasting Zodias Rod.  Originally I was leaning more towards a L power rod, of which they did not produce such.  So I settled on this one as I was looking to replace a Cabela's XML 7' ML rod that fishes well but had that butt weight system that weighs it down.  The rod comes with the same 8 Fuji Alconite guides plus a SiC tip like the baitcasting models.  I did use the rod to toss a lot of light 1/8 oz. lures, to include in-line spinners, poppers, and Yo-zuri Pins Minnow of including the 2" 1/16th oz. version.  It's a good rod for the $200 price point and did everything fine.  No complaints from me, except that for spring fishing that aluminum lock nut is cold.  There is no hook keeper on this model, leaving me to either hook onto the line guides or remove lure altogether.  It was pretty much an utility rod for my intention and it did everything I needed it to do.  I have not tried any float fishing with the rod, as I seem to have been doing less and less of it within the last few years.

      ZDS76LA

After getting that new 2020 Zodias updated model in a casting rod and getting won over by some cold casting backyard, I had to just pick up at least on new 2020 Zodias updated spinning model.  At first I saw the 6'9" ML model but I really was leaning towards a L power.  The limited selection there left me with the 7'6" L power moderate fast action as pretty much the only choice.  Which is acceptable, I was leaning towards a longer rod just for the casting distance leverage.  A lot of this is influenced by the casting effect and results from that new Zodias casting rod.  There are some cosmetic changes to the reel seat.  There is more EVA foam over the entire reel seat and some of it runs onto the top of the handle just opposite the reel.  The locking nut is same as the updated casting rod, it's slightly shorter but slightly larger diameter.  The frames are also changed over to the grey ones.  Instead of the more traditional frame, these have that flanged frame before the ring insert referred as Fuji K frames.

When I put my 1000 sized reel on and line check, what I found was that there was a slight negative line angle on the top side of the rotor to the stripper line guide.  Typically the line is straight, but I checked with a larger reel just to see if it's the same effect.  Used a 2500 sized reel and saw that the line still touches the the ring on the top of the rotor and all around the ring on the full rotor movement.  Hmmm...what does this mean?  How does this benefit or affect the overall performance.  Well I have to wait a see how on the water performance will do in a few months.

And looking at the rod and noticing this "Attention" label and two symbols on it.  I couldn't make out what they heck the symbols were as they were kind of small.  At first I thought maybe just a warning so people don't grab the rod high on the blank and then breaking their rods.  Nah that couldn't be it.  Maybe the aluminum lock nut might pinch their fingers or get stuck on the blank and leveraging will break the rod.  Then finally I always think fishing rod, lightning, oh yeah.  Don't go fishing while there's lightning and watch out for overhead power wires.  D'uh.

I had also looked at several other rods in likeness to include Phenix Feather and Diawa Kage rods.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .
    • SkunkedAgain
Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.
