we are headed up there tommorow and have never used snap weights and was planning on using them maybe? how far do you put up the weight from the lure and the board normaly?

50' (50/50 method) is common. Other method uses 30' I believe. Best advice is pick up a precision trolling chart and read section on snap weights. I can read stuff at home on the internet and usually forget. Great reference and guide. Good luck.

Just saw this now, probably not in time for your trip.

The key with snap weights (and many other things when trolling) is paying attention to what you were doing when you got your bites, and repeating it.

Like goose said, running your bait out 50 feet, then clipping on your snap weight at letting out another 50 feet, is a common approach and is covered in the Precision Trolling book. If that doesn't work another popular method is pulling the the weight 20 or 30 feet in front of the bait and letting out enough line until the weight hits the bottom, then speeding up a little to raise it up.

If you're not sure how deep your baits are running, on Mille Lacs you can troll the gravel bars and feel when your bait is hitting the bottom and use that as a reference.
