Metro Area Minnesota
January 2, 2009
Ice conditions are stable, but not improving much. The recent warm weather (40's on Friday and Saturday) melted much of the snow on the ice, so the next cold snap should add some new ice. The warmth, however, deteriorated ice in some spots. I saw a truck fall through on Prior, so be careful about driving out. Walleyes have become largely nocturnal with all the traffic on the lakes-try small jigging spoons with a minnow head or small minnows on a deadstick along weedlines and at the base of points.

South Central MN
January 2, 2009
Most lakes in the area are now seeing vehicle traffic but the snow cover is creating some insulation for the ice, which then either creates slush or thin ice. So, foot, ATV or snowmobile is still the recommended mode of travel.

Kabetogama and Namakan
January 2, 2009
Another week of mixed bag weather, minus 25 to plus 25 and snow with a little freezing rain. This adds up to difficult ice traveling.
Anglers and spearers made paths to the previously traveled locations and found easy travel and a pretty good bite.
The lake has areas of slush that impedes travel, but many anglers have found it worth the effort to get out.

been hampering fisherman from making it out. Those going are report from

Fall of 2008 has blessed us outdoors enthusiasts with a gift of an incredible Indian summer, one with breezes that fools you just enough, that summer doesn't have to end. With the great weather and the great bite, fishing on the St. Croix River has been a treat. Since October 14th my guide service has brought in limits on each trip.

Rainy Lake
August 25, 2008
Fishing has been HOT HOT HOT!! If you haven't already been up here, you need to come now. Walleyes are stacked on the reefs throughout the lake and are aggressively hitting everything in sight, and I do mean everything! No bait has really stood out over the last two weeks. As long as you get on top of fish, you can catch them with about every lure and technique you can think of.

Fishing for all species of fish continues to be excellent except for muskies, which hasn't got going good yet. The walleye bite is going strong, and they are hitting on just about any presentation. Jigs and live bait rigs accounting for most of the fish.

Leech lake-Longville
July 25, 2008
Fishing on leech continues to be productive. Look for walleyes on bars and shoreline breaks in 20' of water. Bottom bouncers and crawlers have been the most productive, but lindy's and leeches or jigs and minnows are also boating fish. The trolling bite is also good in the evening with shad raps and minnow raps in 8-12' of water.

Cass Lake MN
July 25, 2008
Musky action is starting to pick up more and more each day. Pretty much any kind of lure is producing fish. A lot of the cabbage beds still look kind of brown and worthless but if you find some good green stuff you will find Esox! Big pike have been very slow for my boat though. Not sure why, could be the surplus of baitfish around.

Brainerd Area
July 10, 2008
I think this is the time of the summer that they refer to as the dog days. Sometimes it is hard to figure out what they mean. Because the fishing sure hasn't been bad lately. For most anglers it has been downright outstanding. Sure the walleye fishing has been a little slow, but what can we really expect. I think that the fish are enjoying the stable weather we have been blessed with recently.

Rocks, weeds and points have all been good. Its tough to beat a jig and shiner but leeches under floats have also been producing fish at night.

BWCA and Ely Area
May 20, 2008
Opener stared off great this year we had a late ice off and the big fish were still in the current areas. The ice came off the lakes with a day or two to spare for opener. My first group of the year was my new Romanian friends from Chicago Staying at Timber Trail Lodge. On Sunday morning we woke up to a few inches of snow and portaged into Basswood lake. The water temps were from about 43 to 44 degrees. We got into some nice fish right away and stayed on them the whole day. The big fish of the day was a 28.5 inch walleye caught by Olvi SR. We had a number of fish over 20inches. All of the big walleyes we caught were released! I attached a few pictures of some of the walleyes. The fish were in 17-23 FOW. We used lindy rigs and jigs tipped with fathead and rainbow minnows.

This month has been awesome for very large walleye. Many fish have been tipping the scales at 10pounds (hard to believe but true). There was a period of about five to seven days were the bites were minimum but the bite turn into huge walleye, this was definitely a period were you didn't want to miss a single bite.

Ice fishing season is in full swing, and the fishing has been good. Not too many lakes are seeing vehicle traffic due to snow, but the warm weather has reduced the amount of snow so may be some cold weather will open some lakes up to driving. Panfishing has been very good with reports of big gills, and slabs falling victim.

Grand Rapids
July 18, 2007
It’s the 3rd week in July and Winnie is still producing lots of nice stringers. It is getting harder to get the fish to bite out there on the humps but if you work it over and over with the right bait you will get bit. I have been using bigger leeches and crawlers that are in good shape, now is not the time to have crappy bait. The fish have a smorgasbord of food down there and you need to make them want yours. The humps and bars have been the most productive for me in the 20-24 ft of water.
