Ice Tournament Time
by Lisa G

There is nothing like an ice fishing tournament. Itıs a time when folks of all ages come out to socialize, compare technique, eat, drink and of course, fish! Once you leave dry land and head onto the frozen lake, the real world is somehow left behind.

You no longer worry about the everyday hassles. Your only concern is finding a good spot to fish! Choosing a place to set up is one of the hardest parts of tournament fishing. Typically, everyone arrives at the same time, all searching for the best spot to drill a hole.

One of my favorite Ice Fishing Tournament activities is checking out all the different fur hats anglers are wearing. The hats are not only warm, but make an excellent conversation piece. You will see fox hats, raccoon hats, rabbit and even skunk! The serious ice tournament angler wonıt leave home without the fur.

Observing tournament angler attire is another favorite past time. Items of clothing range from the usual Carhartt bibs and jackets to Zebra striped Zubaıs and moon boots. Nothing is out of style when it comes to an Ice Fishing Tournament.

And of course there is one necessity: food! Ice anglers are always hungry. For some reason, everything tastes better on the ice. Sloppy joes, BBQ beef and chili are some of my favorites.

Watching kids play amongst the anglers is always a treat. You observe youngsters that have never met one another before become playmates within a matter of minutes. Their creativeness is amazing. They conjure up games with chunks of ice and quickly turn a pile of snow into a playground. The smiles and red cheeks tell it all!

After a few hours it is time to return to reality. Prizes are awarded, gear is packed away and everyone says a quick goodbye....until next time.

If you are looking for an ice fishing event that has something for everyone, be sure to come to Mille Lacs on February 17, at Macıs Twin Bay. This tournament will have it all!
