Bulking Up For Dirty Water Bass A lot of people cringe at the thought of fishing a lake with pea soup colored water, I'm talking lakes that swallow secchi disks alive. I've grown to love this particular situation as most of the biggest bass I have boated were plucked straight out of the darkness. Don't be overwhelmed, simply bulk-it-up and get the camera ready. The first thing I do is up-size everything; braided line, powerful rods and the biggest, nastiest jig combo you can put together. Now I don't necessarily mean the heaviest jig you own, but instead the biggest and bulkiest profile. The majority of your bites will come on the fall with this type of presentation. I prefer a 1/4oz or 3/8oz jig which allows me to slow down and keep that lure in the strike zone longer. ... [ Read More ]

How to prepare for upcoming fishing season
It’s April so you know what that means…Spring is here. Which also means, for a lot of anglers and states, the open water fishing season is right around the corner. I know some people have been finding fishable open water for several months here in certain parts of Colorado but for most locations in the Ice Belt the open water season will really take off in the coming month. This is the time of year where anglers develop what is known as “Cabin Fever” and they start dreaming of long rods, fishing from a boat, and casting lures - all the while catching some sun. My way of coping with Cabin Fever, other than fishing, is by organizing and preparing for the upcoming season. So Today I tell you How to prepare for upcoming fishing season? I do this in several different ways but here is my ... [ Read More ]
Fishing Success Be a student
One of the keys to fishing success is to constantly be learning. This is true for each and every time you go fishing– you should leave the water with some type of mental note that you can apply to a future situation. Another big part of that constant learning is to force yourself to experiment with new techniques and baits. This can be a very difficult thing to do because for many anglers confidence plays a huge factor. A lot of anglers tend to do the same things and use the same baits each time out because it has worked for them in the past. It is easy to do something that you’re confident in; it’s not so easy to try something new. One of the ways that I try to shorten the learning curve is by leaving all of my tackle at home, except for the bait that I want to focus on. Doing this ... [ Read More ]
Early Season Walleye
Early Season Walleye While a lot of Walleye fishing consists of deeper fishing off of points, flats and weeds, through much of the year for the next couple of months dominant Walleye patterns will occur in shallow water due to the spring spawning ritual of Walleye. As early as late ice to ice out Walleye begin to make the move to their eventual spawning grounds. On rivers, Walleye will swim as far upriver as possible until reaching dams and other river blocking structures. Once reaching these structures Walleye will find likely areas usually within a mile or two of that structure to deposit their eggs such as rocky or sandy shorelines behind current breaks. On lakes, Walleye will move up to shallow water from their deeper winter haunts depositing their eggs in likely areas such as ... [ Read More ]
Crankbaits For Cold Water Bass – Spring Bass Fishing Tips
The beginning of spring is here, however the deep chill in the air would lead you to believe otherwise. The nights are still cold but the warmth of the daytime sun makes up for what the chill of the night has taken. This is an excellent opportunity to chase after some pre-spawn bass. This is a transition time of year for the lakes and ponds. A time when the water temperatures are beginning to rise and the weed growth is very sparse and small. A lake or pond goes thru this spring transition or “turn over” just as it does in the fall. The warm water is at the bottom and the cold water is at the top. During this turnover period the water begins to mix and it can create quite a mess of the water. Prior to this transition however, the bass can become quite active and feed heavily on ... Late Ice Safety
The time has come when all the permanent ice houses are off the lakes. There is far less traffic on the lakes. With spring just around the corner and warm temperatures this past week and more certainly to come, today I want to remind everyone about late ice safety and the effect that the warm spring thaw has on the lakes. As the temperatures rise to the 40’s during the day and are only dropping just below freezing at night, all the snow on top of the ice is turning into one big “lake.” if you will, on top of the ice. Even with less than a week of these warm temperatures, travel on the lakes has already come to a screeching halt, and very soon we will need to pull out the rubber boots, cleats, and possibly the waders to get on that hot panfish bite. The fishing picks up a ... [ Read More ]
